The Sourcing Shift: Why Chinese Inventory Dominates Trade Flows

The narrative that used excavator supply is controlled solely by Japanese and Korean exporters no longer matches reality. China's construction boom from 2010 to 2020 created a massive trade-in cycle, leaving behind a deep reservoir of late-model Komatsu, Hitachi, Caterpillar, Kobelco, Hyundai, Doosan, Sany, XCMG, LiuGong, and Sunward units. Today, a buyer in Nairobi or Lima can access a broader selection of 20-tonne to 25-tonne machines from Chinese exporters than from any single traditional source. The most common mistake buyers make is anchoring on a budget figure instead of a work profile. For general construction, drainage, and utility contracts, the 20-tonne to 25-tonne class remains the liquidity sweet spot—these units resell quickly if the project finishes early. Mining operators should look at 30-tonne and above, ideally with reinforced booms and high-capacity cooling packages. At the opposite end, 1-tonne to 3-tonne mini excavators serve urban utility work where site access is tight. Undercarriage wear—track link pitch, sprocket tooth profile, and idler wear—should be documented with measurement records, not just photographs. But destination-specific rules often add layers: Kenya requires a Kenya Bureau of Standards inspection certificate; several West African markets require the title to be translated and certified by their consulate in the exporting country; and certain CIS destinations enforce model-year cut-offs that can exclude perfectly functional units. Confirm these requirements before paying a deposit, and ensure the exporter has handled shipments to your specific country before—not just to the region.

Start with a business licence check that explicitly includes construction equipment export authorisation—many trading companies hold general licences that do not cover heavy machinery. Request references from at least two prior shipments to destinations comparable to yours, and follow up directly with those buyers. Photographs of the actual unit must include the hour meter, chassis number stamp, and engine number plate—if a seller sends generic catalogue photos, walk away. A written quotation with itemised breakdown of machine price, inland transport, port charges, export fees, and freight is essential; if the seller pushes a lump-sum price without detail, you lose all negotiating leverage on post-shipment claims. The right exporter provides all of this as standard practice, not as a special favour. When you find that partner, the entire process—from inspection to delivery—becomes an administrative exercise rather than a gamble.
