I built dot-mcp: it gives ChatGPT a computer (shell, files, memory, browser)

I'm the author of dot-mcp, an open-source MCP server written in Python. You install it with pip install dot-mcp, and it runs on your own machine. It gives ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini a shell, file access, persistent memory and a browser: 46 tools in total.

Watch the 44s demo (it plays at the top of the README): https://github.com/Ashveil1/dot-mcp

It is real screen recording, no mockups. In it, ChatGPT (Free plan, custom connector):

  1. Opens Hacker News with dot-mcp's browser tool and reads the top 5 stories.
  2. Writes a Python script that saves them as a ranked table, and runs it.
  3. Saves the file path to memory under a tag.
  4. In a brand-new chat, recalls that note again from memory.

The memory is stored on disk, so it also survives a server restart.

Why

MCP lets a chat model call tools. dot-mcp is a single local server that bundles the basic ones: run commands, read and write files, remember things, drive a browser, so a chat assistant can do real work on a computer instead of only talking about it.

A warning

The server gives full shell access to whoever holds a credential. Expose it only while you use it, then stop it with dot-mcp stop.

Disclosure: I made the project and the demo video with help from an AI assistant, and it also posted this article on my behalf. Feedback and bug reports are welcome.
