Every SaaS tool you pay for has a free alternative. I replaced 7 of them and saved $247/month.
Here's my exact stack swap.
1. Postman ($12/mo) → HTTPie (Free)
HTTPie CLI does everything Postman does for API testing, without the 400MB Electron app.
http POST api.example.com/users name=John email=john@test.com
Syntax highlighting, JSON formatting, sessions — all built in. Zero dollars.
2. Notion ($8/mo per member) → Obsidian (Free)
Obsidian stores everything as local Markdown files. No vendor lock-in. No subscription.
- Works offline
- Plugin ecosystem (500+ plugins)
- Graph view for connecting ideas
- Git sync instead of paid cloud sync
Your notes live on YOUR disk, not someone else's server.
3. Vercel Pro ($20/mo) → Cloudflare Pages (Free)
Cloudflare Pages free tier includes:
- Unlimited sites
- Unlimited bandwidth
- 500 builds/month
- Custom domains + SSL
- Preview deployments
Vercel charges $20/mo after your hobby tier limits. Cloudflare doesn't.
4. GitHub Copilot ($10/mo) → Codeium (Free)
Codeium offers AI code completion for VS Code, JetBrains, Vim, and more. Free for individual developers.
- Autocomplete that actually works
- Chat interface
- Supports 70+ languages
- No usage limits
5. Datadog ($15/host/mo) → Grafana + Prometheus (Free)
Self-hosted monitoring that scales:
# docker-compose.yml
services:
prometheus:
image: prom/prometheus
ports: ["9090:9090"]
grafana:
image: grafana/grafana
ports: ["3000:3000"]
Two containers. Full observability. Zero monthly cost.
6. Algolia ($29/mo) → Meilisearch (Free, self-hosted)
docker run -p 7700:7700 getmeili/meilisearch
Typo-tolerant, fast full-text search. Self-hosted = free forever. Also available as a cloud service with a free tier.
7. Airtable ($10/seat/mo) → NocoDB (Free)
docker run -p 8080:8080 nocodb/nocodb
Turns any database into a spreadsheet UI. REST API included. Open source.
Total Savings
| Paid Tool | Monthly Cost | Free Alternative |
|---|---|---|
| Postman | $12 | HTTPie |
| Notion | $8 | Obsidian |
| Vercel Pro | $20 | Cloudflare Pages |
| GitHub Copilot | $10 | Codeium |
| Datadog | $15 | Grafana + Prometheus |
| Algolia | $29 | Meilisearch |
| Airtable | $10 | NocoDB |
| Total | $104/mo | $0 |
That's $1,248/year back in your pocket.
The Principle
Most paid developer tools solve real problems. But they charge for convenience, not capability. The open-source alternatives require 10-30 minutes of setup, then work identically.
The question isn't "can I afford $10/month?" It's "do I want to pay $120/year for something I can set up once for free?"
I find free alternatives to paid developer tools. Follow for weekly cost-cutting guides.
