Discovering Elyan Labs — Where Vintage Silicon Finally Matters
I recently came across Elyan Labs (elyanlabs.ai) - a quiet launch doing something unique at the intersection of AI and blockchain.
What Makes This Interesting?
Elyan Labs builds open-source infrastructure where vintage silicon matters. Unlike most modern crypto projects chasing the latest GPU clusters, they focus on old hardware.
Proof of Antiquity
Their RustChain blockchain uses a concept called Proof of Antiquity — older computers earn MORE crypto than new ones. A 2003 PowerPC G5 running an LLM earns higher mining rewards than a modern Threadripper. This flips the "newer = better" paradigm and creates real economic incentives for preserving vintage hardware.
Real Technical Contributions
The team has 44+ PRs merged into major open-source projects: OpenSSL, Ghidra (NSA reverse engineering), vLLM (high-throughput LLM serving), and LLVM (compiler infrastructure). They also have a paper accepted at CVPR 2026, giving them real academic credibility.
Why I Found This Compelling
The combination of rewarding old hardware (green tech / e-waste reduction), non-bijunctive attention research, persistent AI persona systems, and 15+ CPU architectures supported (POWER8, PowerPC, SPARC) makes this one of the more original projects I've seen recently. It's genuine infrastructure experimentation with a unique thesis.
