Vercel vs Netlify: Hosting Comparison, Serverless Functions, Edge, Pricing, and DX

Vercel and Netlify are the two dominant platforms for frontend deployment. Both offer Git-based deployment, serverless functions, edge computing, and generous free tiers. But they have different strengths that matter depending on your stack and scale.

Deployment Experience

Both platforms offer automatic deployment from GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket. Push to a branch, and the platform builds and deploys automatically. Preview deployments for pull requests are standard on both.

Vercel's deployment is optimized for Next.js. It detects the framework automatically, configures build settings, and optimizes output. If you use Next.js, Vercel provides the smoothest experience with features like Incremental Static Regeneration and Middleware working out of the box.

Netlify's deployment is framework-agnostic. It works well with any static site generator or frontend framework. Netlify's build pipeline is slightly more configurable with environment variables, build hooks, and deploy contexts available from the UI.

Both support deploy previews, rollbacks, and branch-based deployments. The experience is comparable for most use cases. Vercel has a slight edge for Next.js projects. Netlify has a slight edge for custom build configurations.

Serverless Functions

Vercel and Netlify both offer serverless functions, but they work differently.

Vercel functions run on AWS Lambda under the hood. They support Node.js, Python, Go, Ruby, and Rust. The cold start time is around 50-200ms for Node.js. Vercel functions have a 10-second execution timeout on the free tier and 60 seconds on paid plans.

Netlify functions also run on AWS Lambda. They support Node.js and Go natively, with other languages through custom build steps. Netlify recently introduced Background Functions with a 15-minute timeout on paid plans, which is useful for webhooks and scheduled tasks.

The key difference is in the developer experience. Vercel functions use the api/ directory, the same convention as Next.js API routes. Netlify functions use netlify/functions/ and require a slightly different setup. Vercel's integration feels more natural if you are already in the Next.js ecosystem.

Edge Computing

Vercel Edge Functions run on Vercel's Edge Network using the Web Standards API. They have a 1-50ms cold start and run in over 100 locations worldwide. Edge Functions are ideal for authentication checks, A/B testing, geolocation-based redirects, and personalization.

Netlify Edge Functions also run at the edge, based on Deno. They provide similar benefits: near-zero cold starts, global distribution, and access to geolocation data. Netlify Edge Functions support the standard Web APIs plus Deno-specific features.

The edge computing capabilities are comparable. Vercel Edge Functions use JavaScript only. Netlify Edge Functions also use JavaScript but leverage the Deno runtime, which has broader API compatibility.

Pricing

Both platforms offer generous free tiers. Vercel's free tier includes 100 GB bandwidth, 100 GB-hours of serverless execution, and 1 million edge function invocations per month. Netlify's free tier includes 100 GB bandwidth, 125,000 serverless function invocations, and 2 million edge function invocations.

Vercel's Pro plan is $20 per month per user. Netlify's Pro plan is $19 per month per user. Pricing is similar at the entry level.

At scale, costs diverge. Vercel charges for bandwidth overage at $0.10 per GB for North America and more for other regions. Netlify charges $0.25 per GB for bandwidth overage. Vercel's function execution pricing is also more favorable at high volume.

For high-traffic applications, Vercel tends to be more cost-effective. For low-traffic hobby projects, both free tiers are sufficient.

Developer Experience

Vercel's DX is tightly integrated with Next.js. The Vercel CLI, dashboard, and analytics are polished and well-designed. Environment variable management, team collaboration, and integration marketplace are all above average.

Netlify's DX is more framework-agnostic. The Netlify CLI is powerful, the dashboard is clean, and integrations cover most common tools. Netlify's form handling and split testing features are unique strengths.

Both platforms offer excellent developer experience. The choice often comes down to your framework preference. Next.js developers prefer Vercel. Static site and general frontend developers often prefer Netlify.

Migration Considerations

Migrating between platforms is straightforward for static sites. For applications using serverless functions, you need to rewrite function handlers and update configuration files. Edge functions require more significant changes since the runtimes differ.
