Why Smart People Make Dumb Decisions
The smartest engineer I ever worked with once spent three months building a custom time-series database. He could explain B-trees, LSM trees, and write-ahead logs in his sleep. A less intelligent person who makes a gut decision at least knows it's a gut decision. A smart person wraps the same gut decision in logical-sounding justification and genuinely believes it's rational.

Separate the decision from the decider. Evaluate ideas independent of who proposed them -- including your own ideas. Ask: "If a junior engineer proposed this, would I still think it's good?"
Use structured decision processes. Checklists, decision matrices, pre-mortems. These aren't crutches for weak thinkers. They're safeguards against the cognitive biases that all humans share, regardless of intelligence.
Cultivate intellectual humility. The phrase "I don't know" is not an admission of weakness. It's the starting point of honest inquiry. The smartest people I've met say it frequently.
Track your decisions and outcomes. The best antidote to overconfidence is data. Write down your predictions and reasoning. Review them six months later. Your calibration will improve.
