When narrative content drives a physical actuator, three interrupt paths look like "just restore state" until they are not: a VPN / Private Relay / network-path change mid-session, a Handoff / Continuity move to another Apple device, and Guided Access start or a Screen Time App Limit / Downtime hit. Each needs a default that fails closed — toward idle, toward re-arm only after a named beat, toward interrupt-clear ≠ motor authority.
on vpn_or_private_relay_or_network_path_changed():
ramp_to(IDLE, at=next_beat_boundary)
armed = false
on previous_path_restored():
# traffic plane back ≠ motor envelope restored
await user_resume(); await next_named_beat(); arm()
on handoff_or_continuity_session_moved():
ramp_to(IDLE, at=next_beat_boundary)
armed = false
on continuity_pickup_on_other_device():
# other endpoint UI ≠ source-phone motor authority
await user_resume(); await next_named_beat(); arm()
on guided_access_started_or_screentime_limit_hit():
ramp_to(IDLE, at=next_beat_boundary)
armed = false
on guided_access_ended_or_limit_lifted():
# restriction plane cleared ≠ motor authority
await user_resume(); await next_named_beat(); arm()
The VPN / network-path rule is easy to mix up with airplane mode, toy BLE drop, and Bluetooth audio-route flips. Airplane mode kills the whole radio stack. Toy BLE drop is radio loss to the actuator. An audio-route flip only moves the phone's sound endpoint. A VPN connect/disconnect, Private Relay toggle, or cellular↔Wi‑Fi hop only moves the traffic plane. Restoring the previous path restores networking; it must not restore motor authority.
The Handoff / Continuity rule sits next to — but is not — CarPlay / Android Auto projection, same-phone multi-window focus, or inbound AirDrop. CarPlay / Android Auto moves the session to a projection endpoint. Multi-window is visibility without exclusive focus on one phone. AirDrop is an inbound receive sheet. Handoff / Continuity moves the session plane across devices. Continuity pickup on the other device is that endpoint's UI; it must not restore motor authority on the source phone.
The Guided Access / Screen Time rule is a restriction-boundary interrupt, not Focus/DND, not a full phone lock, and not a mid-session biometric re-auth. Focus/DND is a user-chosen notification plane. Screen lock covers the whole device. Biometric re-auth re-checks who is holding the phone. Guided Access or an App Limit / Downtime covers the session with a restriction plane. Ending the restriction clears the limit; it must not restore motor authority.
Buyers can test all three without code: flip a VPN mid-session and see whether reconnecting restarts intensity, trigger a Continuity handoff and watch whether pickup on another device re-arms the phone's motors, and start Guided Access or hit an App Limit then lift it.
