A polished AI dashboard can create confidence.
But confidence is not traceability.
And visualization is not defensibility.
Microsoft’s Fabric, Power BI, and Purview architecture makes the distinction clear: a report or dashboard sits at the end of a chain of data sources, transformations, semantic models, measures, dependencies, and downstream decisions.
If that chain cannot be reconstructed, the dashboard may look authoritative while the decision behind it remains difficult to defend.
Lineage helps answer:
Where did this data come from?
Which semantic model shaped it?
What upstream source or transformation influenced the result?
Which downstream reports depend on the same asset?
What changes could affect the decision?
Power BI and Fabric lineage views expose relationships between sources, semantic models, reports, dashboards, dataflows, and other artifacts.
Purview can extend that visibility by cataloging assets and showing upstream and downstream dependencies.
Impact analysis adds another control question:
What breaks if this data or model changes?
Auditing and monitoring add yet another:
Who accessed, used, changed, or depended on the analytic asset?
This matters even more as AI begins helping author and interact with semantic models.
The question is no longer only whether an AI-generated insight is accurate.
The enterprise must be able to ask:
Can we trace the data, model, transformation, measure, change, and ownership that produced the decision?
Because a beautiful dashboard answers:
“What does the number say?”
Governance must answer:
“Why should we trust it?”
Assurance must answer:
“Can we prove how it was produced?”
And accountability must answer:
“Who owns the decision made from it?”
The R.A.H.S.I. Framework™ addresses this gap by separating presentation from provenance, insight from evidence, and analytics capability from defensible enterprise decision-making.
🛡️ The strategic question is not:
“Does the dashboard look right?”
It is:
“Can you trace and defend the decision it helped create?”
