Reclaiming Attention: Building a Distraction-Free Android Launcher

As developers, we spend our days optimizing systems, but how often do we optimize our own focus? After realizing how much time I was losing to a cluttered, notification-heavy home screen, I decided to tackle the problem at its root.

I recently open-sourced Minimalist-Focus-Launcher, a custom Android launcher designed specifically for digital wellness. I wanted to step away from the colorful, addictive grid of app icons and create an environment that encourages intentional phone usage.

Here is a breakdown of the core design philosophy and the tech stack behind it.

The Core Features

  • Text-Only Interface: App icons are engineered to grab your attention. By replacing them with a simple text-based list, the urge to mindlessly tap into an app is significantly reduced.
  • Pure Black OLED Screen: Beyond saving battery life on modern displays, the pure black background creates a stark, utilitarian aesthetic. It reinforces the idea that the phone is a tool.
  • Built-in Tasks & App Locks: To make it a standalone productivity hub, I integrated task management directly into the home screen, along with app locks to add friction before opening high-distraction apps.

Under the Hood: Kotlin & Jetpack Compose
Building a launcher requires handling system-level intents and efficiently managing the device's app drawer.

  • I built the project using Kotlin to leverage its modern, concise syntax.
  • For the UI, I relied entirely on Jetpack Compose. Building a minimalist interface was incredibly smooth with Compose’s declarative approach, which made state management for real-time app filtering and task integration straightforward.
