Breathing Exercises for Stressful Moments: 4 Simple Techniques

Some moments in the day feel tight: a long queue, a difficult email, traffic that will not move. In those moments your shoulders rise and your breath gets shallow. You cannot always change the situation, but you can change what you do in the next sixty seconds. Slow, steady breathing is one of the simplest tools for that.

Breathing exercises are not magic and not a cure for anything. They are a way to give yourself a pause. Here are four simple techniques from our full guide:

1. The Slow Belly Breath. Hand on your belly. Breathe in through your nose for a count of four, out through your mouth for a count of six. Repeat four times.

2. Box Breathing. In for four, hold for four, out for four, rest for four. One box; repeat four times.

3. The 4-7-8 Breath. In quietly for four, hold for seven, out slowly for eight. Three or four cycles, ideal in the evening.

4. The Pause-and-Notice Breath. One slow breath in and out. Notice three things you can see, two you can hear, one you can feel. One more slow breath, then carry on.

Fit them into real moments: while the kettle boils, before opening your inbox, at red lights. Small pauses, repeated daily, change how the whole day feels.
