Monitor MSSQL performance with this custom app
Ever had to dig through multiple tools just to debug a failed MSSQL backup or trace an error switching from multiple MS SQL Instances ? π₯π€―
Thatβs why I built a small tool in Visual Studio, using C#, WinForms, Powershell, T-SQL, WMI to monitor SQL Server health, logs, and performance stats in one place.
The primary focus of my project was to make an app that will have all the necessary tools for database administrator in their everyday monitoring work.
What this tool monitors:
- Disk usage and growth
- Memory and CPU utilization
- Database health and size
- Backup and restore history
- Active backup and restore operations
- Table sizes and index fragmentation
- SQL Server error logs
- SQL Agent job failures
- Schema object definitions
- Raw SQL object extraction
- Active sessions and blocking queries
- Deadlock tracking
- Custom session-level monitoring for your SQL Server instance

I'd love to hear your feedback! π€

This is a great example of where WinForms still makes a lot of sense. For an internal monitoring tool like this, having direct access to SQL Server, WMI, PowerShell and Windows APIs can be a real advantage.
I also like the idea of bringing all those monitoring tasks into a single application instead of making DBAs switch between multiple tools.
One thing Iβd be interested to see in a future version is customizable dashboards or widgets, so users could choose which metrics and monitoring panels are visible on the main screen. That could make the tool even more useful for different DBA workflows.
Nice work! The combination of WinForms with T-SQL and PowerShell is particularly interesting.
Would love to hear your thoughts is WinForms still a valid choice in 2025, or am I just being nostalgic ?π
