Most database crashes in Node.js apps don’t happen because of heavy queries.
They happen because of unmanaged connection pools.
When your TypeScript backend scales, spinning up a new Postgres client per request will eventually exhaust your database connection limit. Result? Connection timeouts, dropped requests, and sleepless nights.
Here is how we fix it in production:
• Use pg pool properly: Instantiate a single Pool instance, configure max connections based on your DB tier, and handle idle error events gracefully.
• Strict TypeScript Typing: Define explicit interfaces for your query parameters and returned rows to catch runtime mapping errors at compile time.
• Graceful Shutdowns: Always close active pool connections during SIGTERM/SIGINT signals to prevent dangling transactions.
Good architecture isn't about writing more code. It's about making sure your resources release cleanly when the traffic spikes.
What’s your go-to strategy for handling DB connections under heavy load? Let’s discuss in the comments.
