What a Summer Job Taught Me About Being a Developer

Hey everyone, I'm ACatNight.

I've posted a few things here about learning, side projects, and programming, but I realized I never really introduced myself.

So yeah, I guess I'll do that now.

I'm a software engineering student from China. I started programming with Minecraft server development, and later I started making my own plugins and working on different projects.

One of my main open-source projects is WorldScript, a Minecraft RPG region and event framework.

During my second semester, I spent most of my time working at a small startup that had just started not long before.

It was probably one of the most different experiences I've had so far.

I worked on real projects, fixed real bugs, and had to deal with things that I never really had to deal with at school.

I also made a mistake at work, and I was eventually let go because of it.

That honestly sucked.

But looking back, I still got a lot out of that experience. I learned a lot from actually working on projects, and it changed how I think about software development.

Before that, I mostly thought being a developer was just about writing code and making things work.

After working on real projects, I realized there was a lot more to it.

You have to think about how things are designed, how to find problems, how to work with other people, how to deal with deadlines, and what to do when something goes wrong.

It also made me think more about what I actually want to do in the future.

After the semester, I came back to school and started working on my own projects again.

Right now, I'm mainly learning:

  • C#
  • .NET backend development
  • AI applications

I'm also working with things like ASP.NET Core, databases, Redis, RabbitMQ, Docker, Linux, and async programming.

I'm also rebuilding my main side project, StudyTree.

It's an AI learning reflection project built around a simple question:

What do I actually know, what am I missing, and what should I learn next?

I still have a lot to learn, but for now, I just like building things, breaking them, fixing them, and seeing where it goes.

That's pretty much where I am right now.

Nice to meet you.

我也是因为学习经常熬夜,最晚会熬到凌晨1点,然后早上4点又得起床 :D

还是要注意身体啊,不然学习效率也会跟着下降哈哈😴

Haha, I’m trying, but when it comes to ruining my health, I somehow manage to do it myself. What can I do? Do you have any solution for me?

If you stay up late, catch up on sleep the next day 🤫 That's what I do.

I'm gonna sleep now = w = 😴 The dorm lost power, and my laptop drains the battery way too fast. I'm down to 14% now 💀
