What I’m learning while building an automated VPS hosting platform

I’m currently building an automated VPS hosting platform and wanted to share a few early lessons from the process.

This project started after working with multiple hosting providers and WHMCS setups and realizing how much friction still exists around provisioning, billing, and scaling infrastructure — especially for automation-heavy or container-based workloads.

A few things I’ve learned so far:

  • Automation is easy to underestimate. Even small assumptions in provisioning workflows can turn into edge cases later.
  • Consistency matters more than features early on. Clear product structure and predictable behavior reduce support far more than adding options.
  • Infrastructure projects move slower than typical apps. DNS, SSL, provisioning delays, and third-party dependencies all add complexity.
  • Being honest about what’s “early” helps. It sets expectations and invites better feedback.

Right now I’m focused on refining automation, tightening product consistency, and improving the developer experience.

If you’ve built infrastructure tools, hosting platforms, or automation-heavy systems:

  • What surprised you most early on?
  • What would you prioritize first?
  • Any mistakes you’d avoid if you were starting again?

I’m planning to share progress as I continue building.
