What do you think is the biggest challenge when moving from Windows to Linux?

For many people, switching isn't just about choosing a Linux distribution and installing it.

There are questions around hardware compatibility, software alternatives, daily workflows, privacy, gaming, drivers, and whether Linux is actually ready for their specific needs.

That got me thinking: Can we help people evaluate their Linux migration readiness before they make the switch?

So, I built Linux Migration Companion, an open-source tool designed to help Windows users understand their migration readiness, identify potential compatibility concerns, and create a structured migration plan through a personal Linux Migration Passport.

I really like the idea of making Linux migration more structured instead of leaving users to discover compatibility issues along the way.

For me, hardware and driver checks would be one of the most useful features, especially for people moving from Windows with less common hardware. It would also be great if the tool could combine that with developer environment setup, so users can see what will work before making the switch.

The Linux Migration Passport is an interesting concept too. Having a clear checklist of what’s compatible and what still needs attention could make the transition much less frustrating.

This is a really practical approach to Linux migration. I especially like the idea of the Linux Migration Passport, because having a clear picture of compatibility issues before switching can save a lot of time and frustration.

For me, hardware and driver compatibility would be a major priority, followed closely by developer environment setup. It would be even more useful if the tool could eventually provide recommendations based on a user’s actual hardware and development stack.
