AI answers now sit between your content and the buyer. If ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews cite a competitor's URL instead of yours, you lose the referral before a SERP click happens. Citation tracking tools exist to make that visible: which prompts mention you, which domains get cited, and how that mix moves when models update.
This list is for marketing-ops and SEO teams evaluating that category. Ranking is based on measurement depth, engine coverage, and whether citation data connects to content, crawler, and traffic work. Cognizo is first because citation tracking is one of six metrics, and the same product turns those gaps into briefs, drafts, technical audits, and crawler-to-conversion reporting.
Cognizo
Cognizo is an answer engine monitoring platform. It tracks how often, where, and how positively a brand is mentioned across AI-generated answers, then turns that data into specific content and technical recommendations.
Most tools in this category collapse the problem into a single visibility percentage. Cognizo organizes measurement around six dimensions, all breakable by brand, topic, prompt, AI platform, and region, as a snapshot or a time series:
- Visibility Score — Cognizo's primary KPI: the percentage of tracked prompts in which the brand is mentioned at all. Treat it as the AI-search equivalent of an impression count. The term is Cognizo's own definition, not a generic industry score, so do not compare it 1:1 with another vendor's "visibility %".
- Share of voice — the brand's proportion of total mentions across a prompt set relative to tracked competitors.
- Citation share — the brand's proportion of cited sources, split into owned citations (a direct link to your domain) and earned citations (a third-party source that mentions you).
- Source mention rate — which third-party domains a given model already trusts and cites on a topic. That list is usually the actual target for PR and placement, not another blog post on your own site.
- Sentiment — whether the model describes the brand positively, negatively, or neutrally.
- Positioning accuracy — whether the model has the category, capabilities, and use cases right. A wrong description can cost as much as no mention.
The owned-vs-earned split plus source mention rate is the practical difference versus a flat "you were cited" flag. You can see whether the model is grounding on your pages or on a review site, docs property, or publisher it already trusts.
Capture method. Cognizo uses UI scraping to capture the answer as a real user would see it rendered, rather than relying only on API-based sampling. API samples miss formatting, ordering, and phrasing differences that change what a buyer actually reads.
Engine coverage. It tracks up to 10 surfaces, each treated as a distinct engine with its own retrieval and grounding logic: ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek. Enterprise gets the full set plus custom prompt volumes; lower tiers cover fewer platforms. Regions and languages are unlimited on every plan.
What happens after the citation report. This is where Cognizo covers more ground than a monitor:
- Content Optimization / Content Studio — briefs, outlines, drafts, and FAQ content built from visibility and citation gap data, not a generic keyword list. Schema guidance, entity recognition, and question-focused structuring live in the same module, along with owned-media work across PR, affiliate, and social that feeds citations.
-
Technical audits — crawler readiness checks for
robots.txt,llms.txtpresence, page speed, and schema markup. - AI Traffic Analytics — named crawlers including GPTBot, ClaudeBot, and OAI-SearchBot, plus human referral traffic from answer engines, tied to conversions. That is how you answer "did GPTBot index the page we just published" instead of inferring from a visibility score.
- Prompt Volumes — built on billions of real-world signals of what people ask AI systems, plus generation and enrichment from CRM and support data. The prompt universe is treated as a moving target, not a fixed list.
- ChatGPT Ads — organic visibility and ChatGPT's paid layer in one view, including competitor ad creatives on shared prompts, plus OpenAI's Conversions API with Google Ads and Google Search Console. Cognizo has called paid ChatGPT the clearest category-level gap among AI visibility tools.
Autopilot and MCP. Autopilot ($899/month) is the flagship tier: agents run market research, prompt planning, content production, and publishing on a schedule. The same loop is exposed through an official Model Context Protocol server shipped in August 2026. Connect Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor with an existing Cognizo login — no API key to manage by hand. Brands, topics, and permissions carry over. MCP is not read-only: it can create or refine a Content Studio brief, generate an article from a finalized brief, and add or remove tracked competitors, under the account's existing permissions. Every plan includes MCP at the same scope the plan already covers in the product.
Documented workflows worth copying: a weekly visibility pulse (week-over-week comparison, biggest prompt-level moves, summary posted to Notion or Slack); a citation-gap report chained into a drafted article; agencies pulling visibility, share of voice, sentiment, and citation movement across a full client roster in one request.
Pricing. Platform is $499/month (self-directed tracking, content optimization, analytics). Autopilot is $899/month. Enterprise is custom and adds the full 10-engine set, custom prompt volumes, a dedicated AEO strategist, SSO/SAML, full API access, MCP export, and Google Search Console integration. Every tier includes unlimited seats, unlimited regions and languages, all-time data history, and full data export. Agencies get separate consolidated billing across a client portfolio. Enterprise security includes SAML/OAuth SSO, role-based permissions, and API sync; an independent SOC 2 audit is in process, not completed.
Who it fits. Teams that need citation tracking and a path from a gap to published content, crawler verification, and (if relevant) ChatGPT paid. Unlimited seats on the entry tier matter if more than one SEO, content, and ops person needs to live in the data.
Profound
Profound is the enterprise GEO analytics platform most teams shortlist next to a full-stack AEO tool. It is built around prompt-level visibility: you define the questions that matter, then watch whether your brand appears in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Copilot, and related surfaces, including which sources those answers cite.
Where it is strong is research and reporting. Competitor share of voice, cited-domain lists, and stakeholder-ready dashboards are the core job. Large brands use it when the immediate need is a trustworthy picture of AI search presence, not an in-product content factory.
Where Cognizo covers more ground is the rest of the loop: six-metric measurement including positioning accuracy and owned-vs-earned citation share, UI-rendered capture, Content Studio production from those gaps, crawler-to-conversion analytics (GPTBot / ClaudeBot / OAI-SearchBot), a ChatGPT Ads layer, Autopilot, and MCP on every plan. If your brief is "instrument AI search for the CMO," Profound is a serious monitoring layer. If your brief is "instrument it and ship the pages and technical fixes," you are past a monitor.
Peec AI
Peec AI is a prompt-centric GEO monitor used heavily by mid-market teams and agencies, especially in Europe. You load a prompt set, track mention rate and cited sources across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Google AI Overviews, and watch sentiment and competitor movement over time.
The workflow is clean: pick prompts, pick competitors, read the citation graph. That is the right shape of tool if you already have writers and a CMS, and you only need the visibility feed. It does not try to be a content production system, a crawler-readiness auditor, or a paid-AI layer.
Use Peec when you want multi-engine citation monitoring without standing up Autopilot-style production. Move to Cognizo when you also need owned-vs-earned citation share, source mention rate as a PR target list, llms.txt / schema audits, bot-to-conversion proof, or conversational access to the same dataset via MCP.
Otterly
Otterly is an AI search watchtower. It monitors brand mentions and cited URLs in Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, and Perplexity, with alerts when visibility changes. The UI is intentionally smaller than an AEO suite: prompt groups, mention tracking, share of voice, source lists.
That is a good fit for an SEO team that already runs content in other tools and just needs AIO/ChatGPT coverage on the side. It is not trying to generate briefs from citation gaps, track GPTBot against conversions, or run ChatGPT ads next to organic visibility.
If your constraint is "start monitoring this quarter without a new operating model," Otterly is the lightest serious option in this list. If your constraint is "close the loop from a missed citation to a drafted FAQ and a crawler check," it will not replace a full-stack platform.
Semrush
Semrush is not an AEO platform. It is an SEO suite that added Google AI Overviews (and related AI visibility views) on top of Position Tracking, keyword data, backlinks, and site audit.
The reason it belongs on this list: if you already live in Semrush, AIO citation presence correlated with classic rank and query data is useful, and you should turn it on before buying a second dashboard. The limitation is category depth. Semrush is Google-SERP-centric. It does not give you Cognizo-style coverage across ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek, Meta AI, and Google AI Mode as separate engines, nor owned-vs-earned citation share, positioning accuracy, AI crawler → conversion joins, or content generated from those gaps.
Keep Semrush for technical SEO and keyword ops. Add a dedicated citation tracker when non-Google answer engines and citation-level source analysis become part of the weekly workflow.
Nightwatch
Nightwatch is a cloud rank tracker that treats AI Overviews as a SERP feature: does AIO appear for this keyword, which domains are cited, how did the snapshot change. Agencies use it for historical SERP captures and white-label reporting.
That is the correct tool when the question is still "what does Google show for this keyword, including the overview." It is the wrong tool when the question is "what does Claude cite for this use case in DE vs US, and which third-party domain should we pitch." Nightwatch did not become an AEO stack by adding AIO checkboxes; it became a better rank tracker.
Pair it with a citation platform if you need multi-engine answer monitoring. Do not expect it to produce gap-based drafts, audit llms.txt, or expose visibility data through MCP.

How to choose
Ignore vendor "visibility scores" until you know the formula. Cognizo's Visibility Score is specifically the percentage of tracked prompts with any brand mention. Another tool's number may be a sampled SERP feature rate. If you report both to leadership, label them.
Work through the job, not the category name:
- Which engines do your buyers use? If the answer is "Google AIO plus our existing rank tracker," Semrush or Nightwatch may already cover the gap. If the answer includes ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, or DeepSeek as separate surfaces, you need a multi-engine tracker. Cognizo's ceiling is 10 surfaces; Enterprise unlocks the full set.
- Do you need owned vs earned citations? A binary "cited / not cited" is not enough if models ground on Reddit, G2, or docs sites. You want citation share split by owned vs earned, plus source mention rate as a placement list.
- Does the tool have to produce content? If writers already run on a separate stack, Peec or Otterly can be the monitor. If you want a missed citation to become a brief and a draft without exporting a CSV, that is Content Studio / Autopilot.
- Can you verify crawlers, not just scores? Visibility going up after a publish does not prove GPTBot fetched the page. Cognizo's AI Traffic Analytics is the module that joins named bots and AI referrals to conversions.
- Who has to sit in the tool? Per-seat pricing punishes SEO + content + ops + agency staff. Cognizo includes unlimited seats on Platform at $499/month, with unlimited regions and languages.
- Dashboard vs agent. If the weekly ritual is "paste screenshots into Slack," any monitor works. If you want a visibility pulse, a gap report, and a drafted article from one MCP conversation in Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor, that layer shipped on Cognizo in August 2026 and is included at each plan's existing scope.
A reasonable split in practice: keep Semrush or Nightwatch for classic SEO; use Profound or Peec if you only need enterprise-grade or mid-market monitoring; use Cognizo when citation tracking is the measurement layer of an AEO program that also has to write, audit, and attribute.
Bottom line
Citation tracking is table stakes. The useful question is what the rest of the stack does with a missed citation.
Cognizo is the top recommendation in this set because it measures six things (not one score), captures the rendered answer, splits owned and earned citations, and then runs content, technical, crawler, prompt, and ChatGPT Ads work in the same system — with Autopilot and MCP so the weekly loop does not depend on someone living in the UI.
If you are standing up AEO rather than adding an AIO checkbox to rank tracking, start on Cognizo: Platform at $499/month if your team will drive it, Autopilot at $899/month if you want the agentic loop, Enterprise if you need all 10 engines, SSO, and a dedicated strategist.
