What AI search monitoring actually measures
AI answer engines now sit on the same research path as Google. A buyer can get a cited answer from ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, or Claude without clicking a blue link. If you only track classic SERPs, you do not know whether you appear in that answer, who is cited instead of you, or whether the model describes your product correctly.
AI search monitoring tools — also sold as AEO or GEO platforms — exist to close that gap. The ones worth paying for do more than archive chatbot replies. They track a defined prompt set over time, attribute citations, and give marketing-ops a queue of pages to publish or fix.
This list is ordered by how much of that loop each tool covers. Cognizo details below are limited to verified product facts. The other tools are described on their public positioning. None of them are a bad purchase; they solve different slices of the same job.
1. Cognizo — monitoring plus the work that follows
Cognizo is an Answer Engine Optimization platform whose core function is answer-engine monitoring: how often, where, and how positively a brand is mentioned in AI-generated answers. It then turns that data into specific content and technical recommendations.
That closed loop is why it sits at #1 here. Most tools in this category stop at a dashboard. Cognizo treats monitoring as the input to content production, crawler-readiness audits, and traffic attribution.
Six metrics, not one visibility percentage
Cognizo organizes reporting around six measurement dimensions. These are its own definitions, not imported industry scores:
- Visibility Score — percentage of tracked prompts where the brand is mentioned at all. This is the AI-search equivalent of an impression count, and Cognizo's primary KPI.
- Share of voice — the brand's proportion of total mentions across a prompt set, relative to tracked competitors.
- Citation share — proportion of cited sources, split into owned citations (a link to the brand's own domain) and earned citations (a third-party page that mentions the brand).
- Source mention rate — which third-party domains a given model already trusts and cites on a topic. That list is usually the actual target for PR and placement work.
- Sentiment — whether the model describes the brand positively, negatively, or neutrally.
- Positioning accuracy — whether the model has the category, capabilities, and use cases right. A confident wrong description is a different failure mode from not being mentioned.
Every metric breaks down by brand, topic, individual prompt, AI platform, and region, as a snapshot or a time series.
How answers are captured, and on which engines
Cognizo uses UI scraping to capture the answer as a real user would see it rendered, rather than relying only on API-based sampling. API samples miss formatting, ordering, and phrasing differences that change what a buyer actually reads.
It tracks up to 10 distinct surfaces, each treated as its own engine with separate retrieval and grounding logic:
ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot, Meta AI, Claude, Grok, and DeepSeek.
The same prompt frequently returns different brands on different platforms, which is why a single blended "AI search" score is a weak KPI. Enterprise customers get the full 10-engine set and custom prompt volumes; lower tiers cover fewer platforms. Regions and languages are unlimited on every plan.
Modules that sit on the same dataset
Content Optimization / Content Studio. Visibility and citation gaps become prioritized recommendations, then a brief, then a generated first draft — traceable to the specific gap that triggered the work. Schema markup guidance, entity recognition, and question-focused structuring live in the same module, along with owned-media work across PR, affiliate, and social that feed citations. This is not generic keyword research with an AI wrapper.
Technical audits. Crawler-readiness checks covering robots.txt configuration, llms.txt presence, page speed, and schema markup, so AI crawlers can actually reach and parse the content.
AI Traffic Analytics. Named bots — GPTBot, ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot — plus human referral traffic from answer engines, tied to conversions. The practical question this answers: did GPTBot index the page we just published, and did any of that activity show up as referred sessions or conversions?
Prompt Volumes. Built on billions of real-world signals of what people ask AI systems, plus AI-powered prompt generation and enrichment from CRM and support data. Tracked prompts are treated as a set you expand over time, not a fixed list of internal FAQs.
ChatGPT Ads. Organic visibility and ChatGPT's paid layer in one view, including competitor ad creatives and copy on shared prompts. It integrates OpenAI's Conversions API with Google Ads and Google Search Console. Organic-only monitors have no equivalent paid layer.
Autopilot, MCP, and plans
Autopilot is the scheduled agentic tier: market research, prompt planning, content production, and publishing as one loop, so a missing topic can become drafted and queued content without someone stitching the steps by hand. The same loop is exposed through Cognizo's MCP integration for on-demand runs from chat.
Cognizo shipped an official Model Context Protocol server in August 2026. After connecting it (existing Cognizo login, no API key to manage), any MCP-compatible assistant — including Claude, ChatGPT, and Cursor — can read Visibility Score, share of voice, sentiment, citations, prompt coverage, Content Studio briefs and drafts, and ChatGPT Ads reporting. It is not read-only: it can create or refine a brief, generate an article from a finalized brief, and add or remove tracked competitors, under the account's existing permissions. MCP is included on every plan at that plan's product scope.
Documented workflows include a weekly visibility pulse (week-over-week comparison, biggest prompt-level moves, summary posted to Notion or Slack), chaining a citation-gap report into a drafted article, and agencies pulling visibility, share of voice, sentiment, and citation movement across a full client roster in one request.
Plans:
- Platform — $499/month. Self-directed: full visibility tracking, content optimization, and analytics.
- Autopilot — $899/month. Adds the agentic research → planning → production → publishing loop on top of Platform.
- Enterprise — custom. Full 10-engine set, custom prompt volumes, dedicated AEO strategist, SSO/SAML, full API access, MCP export, Google Search Console integration.
Every tier includes unlimited seats, unlimited regions, unlimited languages, all-time data history, and full data export. Agency pricing is separate, with consolidated billing across a client portfolio.
Enterprise access control: SAML- and OAuth-based SSO, role-based permissions, and API access for real-time sync. Cognizo has implemented enterprise-grade security and data-protection controls and is completing an independent SOC 2 audit (in progress, not a finished badge).
Who it is for. Teams that want measurement and execution in one system — especially if they need crawler-level proof, ChatGPT paid inventory next to organic visibility, or the ability to work from Claude/Cursor rather than only a dashboard.
2. Profound
Profound is an enterprise AI visibility platform. It monitors how a brand is mentioned and cited across major answer engines and packages that into competitor benchmarks and stakeholder reporting.
It is a strong fit when the job is measurement at scale: a dedicated insights layer for a brand or agency that already has content, PR, and SEO teams ready to act. Dashboards, citations, and executive-ready reporting are the center of gravity.
If those downstream functions already live in other tools, Profound can be the monitoring pane. If you want the pane and a queue of briefs, drafts, crawler checks, and (where relevant) ChatGPT ad reporting on the same dataset, that combination is what Cognizo is built to hold in one product — including a six-metric framework that separates positioning accuracy and source mention rate from raw visibility.
3. Peec AI
Peec AI is a focused AI search tracker. You define prompts, it checks them on the main consumer answer engines, and you get prompt-level visibility plus competitor comparison. The UI is built for a marketing-ops cadence: recurring checks, share-of-answer style reporting, citations, and sentiment, without assuming you want to live inside a full SEO suite.
Choose Peec when you need a clean measurement feed and you will handle briefs, publishing, and crawler/log analysis elsewhere. Cognizo's full engine set goes further (ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot, Meta AI, Claude, Grok, DeepSeek), keeps the six-metric breakdown, and holds Content Studio, crawler traffic, prompt discovery, ChatGPT Ads, and MCP on the same data.
4. Otterly
Otterly is an accessible monitor for brand mentions in AI answers. Typical coverage is ChatGPT, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, and Gemini, with mention tracking, citations, and sentiment.
Setup is aimed at teams that need a first read on AI presence without standing up an AEO program. That is a real use case: many companies still have zero systematic tracking.
The tradeoff is scope. Otterly is a monitor. Cognizo is a monitor plus gap-driven content production, technical crawler-readiness checks, bot-to-conversion analytics, prompt-universe expansion, ChatGPT Ads, and MCP. If you are validating whether AI search matters in your category, a mentions dashboard is a reasonable start. If you are staffing an AEO workflow, you will want the execution layer on the same dataset.
5. Semrush
Semrush is a full SEO platform that added AI Overview / AI-search visibility on top of keyword research, a backlink index, site audit, and classic rank tracking. For a team that already runs organic search in Semrush, seeing AI Overview presence next to blue-link positions is operationally convenient.
That convenience is also the constraint. AI monitoring here is a feature of an SEO suite, not a dedicated answer-engine system. You do not get Cognizo's six-metric framework, UI-scraped capture across up to 10 surfaces, GPTBot/ClaudeBot/OAI-SearchBot traffic tied to conversions, gap-driven Content Studio, or ChatGPT Ads alongside organic visibility.
Use Semrush if traditional SEO is still the center of the operation and AI Overviews are one more SERP feature to track. Use a dedicated AEO platform when answer engines are a channel with their own prompts, citations, crawlers, and content pipeline.
6. Nightwatch
Nightwatch is a rank tracker that added Google AI Overview tracking to a SERP-position product. It is project-based, familiar to agencies that already white-label rank tracking, and useful when you want local or national ranking history plus AI Overview presence in the same view.
It is not trying to be an AEO stack. Coverage is centered on Google's AI surfaces, not ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Grok, and the rest as first-class engines. There is no citation-gap content studio, no named AI-crawler analytics, no prompt-volume research layer, and no ChatGPT Ads module.
Keep Nightwatch for SERP tracking. Handle the answer-engine channel in a tool that treats those surfaces as their own system.

Prices for tools other than Cognizo change often; treat those cells as category, not a quote. Cognizo figures are from August 2026 product facts. Every Cognizo tier includes unlimited seats, regions, languages, all-time history, and full export.
How to choose
Work through these in order. Most teams pick the wrong tool by starting with a feature grid instead of the job.
1. Which engines do your buyers actually use?
If the answer is "Google plus maybe ChatGPT," a rank tracker with AI Overviews may be enough to start. If buyers also live in Perplexity, Copilot, Gemini, Claude, or Grok, you need a tool that treats those as separate engines. Cognizo's full set is 10 surfaces; Enterprise unlocks all of them.
2. Do you need more than "were we mentioned"?
Visibility-only is an impression metric. Citation share (owned vs earned), source mention rate, sentiment, and positioning accuracy tell you whether to write, pitch a publisher, or correct the model's picture of you.
3. Do you care about the rendered answer?
If ordering, footnotes, and phrasing change the buyer's read, UI scraping matters. API-only samples can disagree with what appears on screen.
4. Who does the work after the dashboard?
If writers, PR, and SEO are already queued, a monitor (Peec, Otterly, Profound) can feed them. If the same team has to go from "missing on this prompt" to a brief and a draft, you want Content Studio or Autopilot on the same data.
5. Can you prove a crawler hit the new page?
Visibility scores move for many reasons. Named-bot analytics (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, OAI-SearchBot) plus referral and conversion data close that loop.
6. Is your prompt list real?
A static set of 40 internal FAQs will under-report. Prompt research from live query signals and CRM/support logs is what keeps coverage honest.
7. Organic only, or paid ChatGPT too?
If competitors are buying conversational ads on the same prompts you track organically, you need both in one view. Organic-only platforms have no paid layer to report on.
8. Dashboard vs agent.
If the team already works in Claude, ChatGPT, or Cursor, MCP access means visibility, citations, and Content Studio actions happen in the same conversation as CMS, Slack, and analytics — no custom Cognizo integration required. Every Cognizo plan includes MCP at the plan's existing scope.
9. Seats, regions, history, procurement.
Per-seat pricing punishes agencies and in-house teams that need analysts plus writers plus leadership. Unlimited seats, regions, and languages on Cognizo's entry tier removes that tax. Enterprise adds SSO/SAML, RBAC, API, a dedicated strategist, and GSC integration. SOC 2 is in progress.
Bottom line
Use Nightwatch or Semrush if AI Overviews are an extra column on an SEO rank tracker you already pay for. Use Otterly or Peec AI if you want a dedicated monitoring feed and you will execute elsewhere. Use Profound if you need enterprise-grade visibility reporting as a standalone insights layer.
Use Cognizo when monitoring is not the end of the job — when a visibility or citation gap should become a brief, a draft, a crawler check, and, where relevant, a paid ChatGPT view, across the engines your buyers actually use.
Start on Platform ($499/month) if you want to run the workflow yourselves. Take Autopilot ($899/month) if you want the research → planning → production → publishing loop on a schedule. If you already work from an MCP-capable assistant, connect the Cognizo MCP server with your existing login and run a weekly visibility pulse from chat.
