The first AI colorization of my grandfather's 1943 photo gave him a bright navy uniform. He laughed, I learned something, and the lesson is that 1940s photos are a special case. A model that works on modern snapshots fails here, and the reasons are measurable.
Start with the raw material. WWII-era film has heavy grain, low ISO film with noise in the shadows. Dynamic range is narrow, blown highlights, crushed blacks, thin midtones. Skin reads as gray because the film's sensitivity desaturated it. Uniforms appear in nearly every photo, and they vary wildly by country, year, and branch. Group shots are everywhere, rows of small faces. Combine all of that and you're not restoring color that once existed, you're inferring color that was never recorded.
Where models fall apart, in order of how often I've seen it:
Uniforms are the biggest trap. In a model's training data, "military uniform" tends to mean modern camouflage or dress blues. A 1943 German Heer tunic was field gray-green, the US Army wore olive drab, the Soviets a grayish dark brown-green. The model guesses from modern associations and guesses wrong. Manual color specification is the only reliable fix, and I treat it as a required step for any uniform in frame.
Gray skin is second. The model can't cleanly separate "shadow" from "skin," so it over-compensates, and faces come out red or blue like the subject is ill. This happens most on faces that are small in frame, which means group photos.
Plain backgrounds come third. Ruins, camps, and huge skies give the model no reference, so the whole frame flattens into one brown-gray tone. The fix is forcing structure: light and shadow separation across sky and facades before you accept the color pass.
Grain and scratches round it out. The colorizer treats noise as color detail, turning grain into colored static and bleeding color along scratch lines. That's why the order matters.
The workflow I actually use, in order: restore first, every scratch, crease, and noise patch cleaned before any color is applied. Pick a model trained on historical photos rather than a generic filter, they read film grain differently. Specify key colors manually, uniforms, flags, anything iconic, don't let the model guess. Test small before going big, run a low-res preview, confirm the color direction, then spend time on the high-res pass. And do one more restore pass after colorizing, because residual noise and false color survive into the color image.
Type-specific notes: soldier portraits get uniform color and cap badge specified, face brightened. Troop group shots need noise fixed before color, or rows of tiny faces turn into a mess. Factory floor photos should keep grime and metal tones realistic, over-cleaning ruins the period feel. Family portraits let you work with the era's muted practical palette. Street scenes and ruins need explicit light and shadow structure or the whole image goes flat.
The rule that holds everywhere: make the image clean first, then make it colorful. Reverse the order and you pay for it in rework, and rework on a photo that can't be retaken is time you don't get back.
