Data Brokers Are Selling Your Old Tweets: How to Check and Opt Out
A separate industry buys and resells social data, then stitches it into profiles sold to recruiters and insurers. How the pipeline works and how to clear a listing.
The short version first, then the parts that usually get skipped.
Deleted tweets do not leave the market. Broker profiles are assembled from bought and scraped data, so a listing can contain details you removed from the platform years ago and never told anyone about.
What actually works, in order: Check the major people-search sites by name and city, run each opt-out form, then set a recurring reminder. Listings reappear when the broker refreshes from an upstream feed.
The numbers worth knowing: Broker data arrives three ways: purchase, scraping and licence. Opt-out is part of most people-search sites’ compliance story, so the forms exist and they do work, temporarily.
Where people go wrong: Treating opt-out as a one-time job. A cleared listing comes back on the next refresh, so the loop matters more than any single request.
A note on defaults. Every tool in this space ships with settings chosen for the average case, and if your situation is not average, the default path is what sends you back to redo the work a month later. Decide what you are optimising for in one sentence, then let that sentence filter the steps. Anything that does not connect to it can wait.
