The Right to Be Forgotten: Getting Search Engines to Delist Your Old Tweets
Deleting a tweet does not remove the search result, the archive snapshot or the scraper copy. Which lever moves each layer, and how to write a harm statement that lands.
The short version first, then the parts that usually get skipped.
The Google Spain ruling built a delisting remedy, not a take-down remedy. Google has to stop surfacing the page for searches built on your name. It does not have to erase the page from the publisher’s site. Getting that backwards wastes a month of forms.
What actually works, in order: Work the three layers in order. Delete the source, then file one URL per delisting request with a concrete harm statement under 200 words, then handle archives and people-search sites.
The numbers worth knowing: Layer 1 propagates in minutes to 30 days, layer 2 takes 2 weeks to 3 months, layer 3 runs from days to months. Budget two to eight weeks for a delisting decision.
Where people go wrong: Starting at layer three because that is where the damage looks worst. A delisted URL that still resolves to a live page tends to creep back into results.
A note on defaults. Every tool in this space ships with settings chosen for the average case, and if your situation is not average, the default path is what sends you back to redo the work a month later. Decide what you are optimising for in one sentence, then let that sentence filter the steps. Anything that does not connect to it can wait.
