France has exactly 11 national public holidays in 2026, which is mid-table for Europe. The interesting part is what the French do with them: the pont, or bridge day.

When a holiday lands on a Tuesday or Thursday, a big chunk of the country just takes the single day in between off. Not a legal right, a workplace tradition. And 2026 is a good year for it.

The two days that quietly vanish

Assumption falls on a Saturday and All Saints' Day on a Sunday, so office workers effectively lose both in 2026. The rest of the calendar is generous.

The best bridge combinations

May is stacked. Labour Day on Friday May 1, Victory Day on Friday May 8, Ascension on Thursday May 14. Take off May 15 and May 7, and nearly every weekend in the month stretches to three or four days.

Bastille Day on Tuesday Jul 14 becomes a four-day run by taking Monday Jul 13. Christmas on Friday Dec 25 turns into four days by taking Thursday Dec 24.

Why the count doesn't tell the story

Germany has 9 federal days, the UK 8, Italy 12. France's 11 look average, but the culture stretches them into 15 or 16 actual days off. Employers widely accept bridge requests.
