On-Device Semantic Retrieval on iOS: How Lumo Solves Note Fatigue Without Cloud Latency

When building personal AI productivity tools, most products follow a lazy cloud-first pattern:
Every keystroke or audio chunk is shipped across the public internet to a remote endpoint, processed through heavy pipelines, and pushed back after a 2-second roundtrip.

For developers and privacy-conscious professionals, this pattern is a dealbreaker:

  1. Network Latency: You should not have to wait for an internet handshake just to capture a quick epiphany in an elevator or on a flight.
  2. Data Confidentiality: Architecture trade-offs, private bug post-mortems, and customer feedback should not sit unencrypted on a third-party server.

When designing Lumo (Memory Copilot), we chose a fundamentally different engineering path: local-first semantic retrieval.

The Local Pipeline: From Audio to Vector Index

To achieve sub-second capture on iOS, Lumo splits the processing workload into balanced local stages:

  1. Pre-Warmed Audio Stream: Native iOS AVFoundation audio session pre-warming guarantees recording starts within 100ms of tapping the microphone.
  2. On-Device Text Normalization: Filler words and ambient artifacts are scrubbed using native CoreAudio DSP filters before tokenization.
  3. Local Embedding Generation: Dense vector projections are computed directly on Apple Silicon Neural Engine (ANE), keeping token processing overhead under 15ms.
  4. Encrypted SQLite Vector Index: Notes and embeddings are stored in a hardware-isolated SQLite store protected by Apple Data Protection Keychain keys.

Why Sub-Second Capture Matters

Every 500ms of friction added to a note-taking app reduces the likelihood of capture by 50%. If an engineer has to:

  • Unlock phone -> Wait for app to fetch remote profile -> Select folder -> Type title -> Add tags -> Write note...

They simply will not do it. With Lumo (Memory Copilot):

  • Press widget / shortcut -> Speak or type -> Done.
  • Retrieval is instant, intelligent, and private.
