Stop Searching, Start Coding: Find Your Perfect Hacktoberfest Issue in Minutes

How much time will you spend scrolling through GitHub, searching for the perfect issue this Hacktoberfest?

What if the answer was... zero? 🤔

Every year, Hacktoberfest brings the developer community together for a month-long celebration of open source. But for many (especially first-timers), the biggest challenge isn't the coding—it's finding a project to contribute to.

That's why I'm thrilled to share githubrepos.online, a project I built to help you contribute to open source, faster. We find the best beginner-friendly issues so you can focus on what matters: coding and community.

But first, for anyone new to the event...

What is Hacktoberfest? (Your Quick Guide)
Hacktoberfest is an annual, month-long event (run by DigitalOcean, Docker, Appwrite, and others) that encourages people to contribute to open-source projects.

The "What": It's a celebration of open source. By participating, you can learn, build your skills, and give back to the community.

The "How": You sign up on the official Hacktoberfest website (registration usually opens in late September). Then, you must make a set number (traditionally 4) of quality pull requests (PRs) to participating repositories on GitHub or GitLab.

The "Goal": It's not just about getting a free t-shirt or planting a tree (though those are cool rewards!). The real goal is to get more people comfortable with contributing to open source, making their first PR, and becoming part of the community.

The "Catch": Finding the right issues. You need to find repos that are actively participating (look for the hacktoberfest topic) and issues that match your skill level (like good first issue or help wanted).

This "catch" is where many developers get stuck.

The Endless Scroll for a "Good First Issue"
We've all been there. You filter by good first issue and hacktoberfest, but you still end up:

Scrolling through issues that are way too complex.

Finding simple issues that were already claimed hours ago.

Stumbling on projects that haven't been active in years.

It's frustrating, and it's a huge barrier to entry. I wanted to fix that.

Solution: Meet githubrepos.online
I built githubrepos.online with one goal: to make finding your next open-source contribution dead simple.

✅ Instantly filter for "good first issues." No more manual searching.

✅ Select your favorite programming language. Find issues in Python, JavaScript, Go, Rust, and more.

✅ Use the dedicated "Hacktoberfest" search. This automatically finds relevant repos tagged for the event.

✅ Login with GitHub to track your PRs. Watch your progress as you work toward your Hacktoberfest goal.

We're Here to Help You Succeed
But we're more than just a search tool. Throughout October, we'll be actively sharing guides and tips to help new developers make their first pull requests with confidence. We're here to support you on your open-source journey!

A massive shout-out to the teams at Hacktoberfest, DigitalOcean, Docker, Inc., and Appwrite for bringing this incredible event to life every year. We hope githubrepos.online helps even more people participate!
