VIDRAFT's 'ai-world': did the AI civilization emerge, or was it recited?

VIDRAFT has released ai-world (CIVOS), a research platform that puts a control group under the popular claim that multi-agent simulations show "emergence." When thousands of AI agents form societies and civilizations, is it genuine exploration — or is the language model simply reciting the human history it memorized?

The key is the control. VIDRAFT holds the task structure fixed and only makes the model's prior knowledge unusable — or deliberately wrong. Removing that knowledge caused "discovery" to collapse; wrong knowledge was worse than none. Meanwhile runs with knowledge intact barely varied across random seeds — the signature of recall, not search. The team applied 40 seeds, permutation testing and multiple-comparison correction, and kept even its own mistaken verdicts and retractions on the record.

"We talk about AGI, but we don't exaggerate," a VIDRAFT representative said. "Much of what has been called emergence may have been recall — and separating the two requires a control." ai-world is viewable on Hugging Face without signing in; logging in opens a planet seeded from your username.
