Amazon vs Etsy vs Shopify: How Product Descriptions Should Differ
Sellers who list the same product across all three platforms often reuse one description everywhere. That's a mistake — each platform's buyers arrive with a different mindset, and the description that converts on one can actively hurt conversion on another.
Amazon: Specs First, Story Never
Amazon shoppers are usually comparison-shopping against 5 other listings in open tabs. They want dimensions, materials, compatibility, and quantity — fast, scannable, bullet points. Storytelling here reads as filler standing between the buyer and the "Add to Cart" button.
Etsy: Story First, Specs Second
Etsy buyers are often paying a premium specifically because something feels handmade or personal. A description that opens with "Made in my small home studio in..." does real conversion work here — the same opening on Amazon would just slow the buyer down.
Shopify: Brand Voice, Full Control
On your own Shopify store, you're not competing inside someone else's search results — you're the whole experience. Descriptions can be longer, can build a brand voice across the whole catalog, and can link to related products or your own content, none of which makes sense inside Amazon or Etsy's constrained templates.
The Practical Takeaway
If you sell in multiple places, write the description for the platform's buyer intent first, then adapt — not the reverse. A spec-first Amazon description pasted into Etsy will underperform against a competitor who actually wrote for that buyer.
