Seasonal Background Swaps for Product Photos

Small shops often want their product photos to match the season: snow for winter, flowers for spring, beach light for summer. Reshooting everything four times a year is expensive. Swapping backgrounds with focused AI edits can refresh a catalogue while keeping the product itself untouched.

Start with a clean master photo

The best source is a product photographed on a simple background with soft, even light. The cleaner the edges of the product, the easier it is to place it into new scenes convincingly.

Protect the product

Use a mask or region selection that covers the background, not the product. Labels, logos and textures should remain exactly as photographed. Customers should receive what they see.

Match the light

The most common sign of a fake background is mismatched light. If the product was lit from the left, the new scene needs light from the left too. Describe it in the prompt:

Snowy windowsill scene, soft daylight from the left matching
the product, gentle blue-white tones, blurred pine branches
in the background, product shadow falling to the right.

Add contact shadows

Products need to sit on a surface. A soft shadow where the product touches the ground anchors it. If the edit misses the shadow, paint a small mask under the product and ask for "soft contact shadow on the surface".

Keep scenes simple

Seasonal backgrounds should hint at the season rather than overwhelm the product. A few leaves, a strip of sand or a blurred string of lights is enough. Busy scenes distract from what you are selling.

Stay consistent across the catalogue

Use the same seasonal description for every product in a collection. A spring collection where each product has a completely different background looks random. Write one scene description and reuse it.

Check marketplace rules

Some marketplaces require a plain white background for the main image. Use seasonal versions for secondary images, social posts and your own website instead.

Tools

I have tried seasonal swaps in Nano banana 2.1, because its focused, mask-guided edits are exactly what keep the product untouched while the scene changes.

A seasonal plan

  • Spring: light pastel tones, small blossoms, morning light.
  • Summer: warm sunlight, light wood or sand, soft shadows.
  • Autumn: warm amber tones, a few leaves, cosy textures.
  • Winter: cool light, soft snow or wool textures, warm accent lights.

With a clean master photo and one scene description per season, a whole catalogue can be refreshed in a day instead of a week of reshoots.
