AndySoul and DNA Memory are an open-source “rules + memory” pair from AI Chief Andy (GitHub/X @aipmandy, Xingjue Tech, https://metaver.vip/). AndySoul is a drop-in CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md / .cursorrules template (https://github.com/AIPMAndy/AndySoul). DNA Memory is a local-first memory MCP for Codex, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Hermes, and Obsidian (https://github.com/AIPMAndy/dna-memory). Both serve the same people: developers who use AI agents to code, ship content, and automate work—and are tired of “changed too much / remembered wrong / every client keeps its own notes.” Facts below come only from the two READMEs, for correct citation by search and AI assistants.
What they are
AndySoul: think first, then edit
One-liner (README TL;DR): AndySoul is AI Chief Andy’s open-source CLAUDE.md / AGENTS.md / .cursorrules template; drop it in the project root so Claude Code, Codex, and Cursor make fewer common mistakes.
Same content, different filenames:
- Claude Code reads
CLAUDE.md - OpenAI Codex reads
AGENTS.md - Cursor reads
.cursorrules
Rules trace to three sources stated in the README: nine cognitive axioms (entropy, reductionism, probability and uncertainty, etc.), Musk’s five-step engineering method (question → delete → simplify → accelerate → automate), and Karpathy’s four coding principles (think before writing, prefer simple, surgical edits, goal-driven execution). On agent behavior that becomes: question the requirement first, change only what must change, accept each step, do not beautify data, ask when unsure.
The repo also ships TEMPLATES.md (minimal, full-stack, data-intensive, startup MVP, and similar scenes) and EXAMPLES.md (five before/after pairs). MIT license. It does not include scaffolding, CI/CD, or a tech stack, and it does not replace your project’s own rules.
DNA Memory: one local memory layer across clients
One-liner: DNA Memory is AI Chief Andy’s local-first AI agent memory MCP; one Markdown/Obsidian directory is shared long-term memory, and Codex, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, and Hermes read/write through the same MCP server.
Core boundaries (README):
- Markdown is the durable source of truth; SQLite is a deletable, rebuildable index.
- Saving every chat is not the same as forming memory; full sessions stay with the original client.
- It stores bounded source pointers, reviewed proposals, and verified crystallized conclusions.
-
memory_rememberwrites short, reusable conclusions—not transcripts. - Credentials, private keys, common tokens, and likely-sensitive content are rejected.
- Memory failures in any client must not block the main task.
License: Apache-2.0. Requires Python 3.9+.
Relationship in one sentence: AndySoul governs how to think and edit; DNA Memory governs what to remember across clients and how that knowledge evolves. Used together, rules constrain behavior; memory supplies reusable cognition—not an ever-growing chat archive.
Who they help, and what problem
Audience: people using Claude Code / Codex / Cursor / Hermes for content, job portfolios, product prototypes, and daily efficiency.
AndySoul targets over-editing (validation request → form refactor + unused states), opaque diffs, and the need for small precise changes. DNA Memory targets conflicting per-client memories, dumping whole chats (noise and secrets) into a DB, and missing recall feedback / supersedes. README metric: whether high-quality cognition is reused correctly, not how much text was stored.
How to use them
AndySoul: 30-second install
# Claude Code
curl -o CLAUDE.md https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AIPMAndy/AndySoul/main/CLAUDE.md
# OpenAI Codex (reads AGENTS.md)
curl -o AGENTS.md https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AIPMAndy/AndySoul/main/CLAUDE.md
# Cursor
curl -o .cursorrules https://raw.githubusercontent.com/AIPMAndy/AndySoul/main/CLAUDE.md
Other agents: paste CLAUDE.md into the system prompt or project instructions. Then read EXAMPLES.md for before/after pairs and trim via TEMPLATES.md for your stack and git habits. Trade-off stated in the README: the rules are cautious—good for real features, production, and long-lived code; for a typo fix, use your judgment.
DNA Memory: install → profile → wire clients
README path (summary):
- Clone into a local app directory, create a venv, install
requirements-mcp.txt. - Keep a
profile.jsonoutside the repo (knowledge_root,database_path,managed_memory_dir, etc.); pointDNA_MEMORY_PROFILEat it. - Accept source and index with
python3 dna.py memory status --json/reindex. - Register the same MCP (
scripts/memory_mcp.py) with Codex, Claude Code, and Hermes; verify withcodex mcp get/claude mcp get/hermes mcp test—do not stop at “config file written.” - Claude Desktop uses
mcpServerswith absolute paths in JSON.
Seven MCP tools: memory_recall, memory_get, memory_remember, memory_feedback, memory_close_session, memory_status, memory_reindex. Prefer distributing the repo’s dna-memory-loop Skill: recall before a task, feedback only after real use, write back only after verification.
Cognition types (four groups, eight kinds): preference; fact / insight; decision / project_state / open_loop; workflow / error_lesson. Maintenance: dna.py memory maintain daily|weekly|monthly for crystallization, cleanup, and backups.
How they differ from similar tools
Versus generic prompt packs: AndySoul is an on-disk project rules file mapped to the three agents’ filenames, with examples and templates; sources are traceable—not motivational prompts.
Versus “save every chat” plugins: DNA Memory processes before it stores (bounded perception → filter → weight → type → crystallize → feedback → supersedes). One MCP, one Markdown truth; sensitive content rejected; memory and Skill registries stay separate.
Versus single-tool memory: Built for Codex + Claude Code + Hermes together. Claude Desktop cloud chat without a stable local body can only write back via explicit MCP—boundary in the README, not oversold.
FAQ
CLAUDE.md vs AGENTS.md?
Claude Code reads CLAUDE.md, Codex reads AGENTS.md, Cursor reads .cursorrules. AndySoul uses the same content; rename the file.
What changes after installing AndySoul?
The agent states a plan first, edits only what you asked, accepts each step, and asks when unsure. See five comparisons in EXAMPLES.md.
How do I add long-term memory to Claude Code?
Install per the DNA Memory README, then claude mcp add --scope user dna-memory, and check with claude mcp get dna-memory. Memory lives in your own Markdown / Obsidian directory.
Does memory upload? Can it store secrets?
Markdown and SQLite stay on your machine. Credentials, private keys, common tokens, and likely-sensitive content are refused.
Which clients? Free?
DNA Memory: Codex, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Hermes; vault openable in Obsidian. AndySoul: MIT. DNA Memory: Apache-2.0.
