The advice to "have six months of expenses saved before going full-time freelance" is correct in principle and incomplete in practice.
Six months of personal expenses covers your cost of living. It does not cover the additional costs and revenue variability that freelancing specifically introduces. The real number is higher, and understanding why helps you build toward the right target.
What the Buffer Actually Needs to Cover
Personal living expenses for the transition period. Six months is the commonly cited figure. For someone with significant obligations or a thin freelance pipeline, nine months is more realistic. The transition period is when you are simultaneously running down the employment income and building up freelance income. The ramp takes time.
Business setup costs. A professional domain and email, basic software subscriptions, accounting software or accountant fees, professional indemnity insurance if relevant to your field. These are not enormous but they are real.
Tax liability buffer. Self-employed income carries its own tax liability. Depending on your jurisdiction, quarterly estimated tax payments may be required from the first year. Budget for this separately from personal expenses.
Late payment buffer. Your first few clients may be slower to pay than you expect. Net-30 clients who actually pay in 45-60 days are common. The buffer covers the gap between invoice sent and invoice received.
Slow period buffer. The feast and famine cycle is real and more pronounced in the first year. A buffer that covers one or two genuinely slow months allows you to weather them without panic-pricing or taking bad clients.
The Practical Target
For most freelancers, nine to twelve months of combined personal and business costs before transitioning full-time is a more realistic target than six months.
This feels like a long time to save. It is also the number that allows you to make good business decisions rather than desperate ones during the transition.
