The expansion of artificial intelligence has become so vast that its emissions match Germany’s complete automobile fleet — one of the world’s major car countries.
All ChatGPT prompts, all AI-generated pictures, all model training cycles across the globe, together total: ~33–80 million tonnes of CO₂ annually (Patterns, peer-reviewed). Include semiconductor plants and server construction: the figure climbs to up to ~110 Mt.
The 45 million cars in Germany: roughly the same.
Germany required a hundred years plus 45 million motors to hit that figure. Artificial intelligence arrived at that point in around four years.
And AI’s environmental impact is set to double by 2030, while German car emissions gradually shrink.
How they differ
German motorists pay fuel taxes on each litre. AI companies keep billions in subsidies, shift power network expenses onto your power account, and — across ten of the top thirteen, such as OpenAI and Anthropic — share zero information.
Artificial intelligence has stopped being a negligible fraction. Its emissions match a nation’s — but its oversight matches a small new business.
