How to Edit Images With AI on Your Mac in 2026 (No Cloud Uploads)

You have a useful photo. You want another visual direction.

What kind of edits can you make?

Start with a change that benefits from a new interpretation: a pencil illustration from a room photo, a warmer lighting concept, or a painted version of a landscape. Your source gives the model a starting composition, and your prompt describes the result.

This image-to-image route can change details outside the part you mention. Use it for concepts and variations. It does not promise an exact object removal, an unchanged face or a pixel-perfect commercial retouch.

For a first attempt, choose a landscape or a still-life photo. Compare the new image with the original before moving to work where exact details matter.

Choose a model that accepts a starting image

In Models, choose a local image model with image-to-image support. The released catalog includes SDXL Lightning and Juggernaut XL variants with that capability. A text-to-image-only model can generate a new scene but cannot use this editing route.

For a concrete option, Juggernaut XL v9 (Light) has a catalog download of about 2.9 GB. That file size is not its working-memory requirement. Use the app's hardware guidance, leave room for generation, and close other heavy apps if memory is tight.

Use a model supported by your Mac and the app’s local image runner. Do not choose a Core ML or MLX image model for this particular edit path; the current path rejects those reference-image edits.

Z-Image models are also excluded from this reference-image path in the checked release. The model's supported image mode matters more than its name or size.

Make one variation from a photo

1. Download and select the compatible local image model in Models.
2. Open Chat, then the + composer menu and choose Generate image.
3. Open Image options and select + Init image. Choose your local photo.
4. Check that the filename appears beside Strength.
5. Write a prompt describing the result, for example: “A watercolor illustration of this garden scene, soft green leaves, warm afternoon light, gentle paper texture.”
6. Generate one image and compare it with your source.
7. Open the result and use Download to save the version you want.

Keep the original photo. Your generated image is a new result to review; it should not replace the source you may need for another attempt.

How do you keep more of the original?

Lower Strength to keep more influence from the starting image. Raise it when you want a larger change. The control runs from 0.1 to 1, but the useful value depends on the photo, prompt and model.

Try a moderate setting, inspect the result, then change one thing at a time. If the composition drifts too far, reduce Strength. If the image barely changes, increase it a little. Keep the model and prompt fixed while you learn what that adjustment does.

Avoid adding several unrelated changes at once. “Make this a pencil illustration” is easier to judge than changing the subject, setting, lighting and viewpoint in the same request.

When the result is wrong

If the app says the model cannot edit images, select an image-to-image-capable model. If it reports a missing encoder or other companion file, complete the model download instead of repeatedly resending the prompt.

If generation runs but details are wrong, review the image as a new concept. Lettering, logos, hands, faces and product geometry can change. Add exact labels later in an image editor rather than assuming a generated version is correct.

Use the selected model's defaults for your first run. Bigger output sizes consume more resources; start with a manageable draft size before making a larger result. No single generation time applies to every Mac.

Check the offline route

After setup, use a source photo stored locally, select the local image model and disconnect internet access. Generate a simple variation. Leave optional prompt enhancement off for this first check so you are testing the image model without another model dependency.

This guide uses the reference-image workflow present in OGAD 0.0.51. It avoids a cloud AI upload for generation; separate backup and sync services retain their own settings.
