A long conversation can lose the detail that made the first answer useful. OGAD (Off Grid AI Desktop) lets you increase the local model's context window, within the model's supported range and your computer's available memory. This can give a reply more working context without sending the conversation to a cloud model.

Local chat is available without Pro. Download the model first; local inference can then work without internet. A bigger context window uses more memory and does not guarantee that every old message or every page of an uploaded file will reach the model.
What does a larger context window change?
Context is the working space for instructions, conversation material and the answer. It is measured in tokens, not pages. Increasing it can help when you compare longer notes or carry a detailed discussion through several turns.
It does not improve missing source material. Document search can still select only relevant sections. A model can also overlook a fact that is present. Ask it to identify the supporting passage before you rely on an answer.
Start with one longer task
Use a conversation or pair of notes that you can check yourself. For example, ask the model to compare two versions of a project brief and list changed requirements with short supporting quotes. Keep the same input when you compare settings.
- Load a downloaded local text model.
- Open the model settings and select the Text tab.
- Increase Context window by one available step.
- Allow the model to reload if needed, then repeat your sample task.
- Check the answer, the effective context reported by the app and whether your other apps remain responsive.
The available choices can extend to the model's reported maximum. That maximum describes the model; it is not a promise that your computer has enough memory to use it.
What if memory becomes the limit?
Lower the context setting first. Close unused apps or select a smaller model if necessary. A smaller model with enough room for your source material may be more useful than a larger model that cannot hold the task.
The advanced KV cache setting offers f16, q8_0 and q4_0. The quantized options reduce cache memory and enable FlashAttention. They are a further option to test, not a guarantee of identical answers or universal runtime support. Change one setting at a time and return to the prior working choice if the model fails to load.
Max output is a separate response limit within the context window. A larger context does not require a longer reply. Ask for a concise result so the extra space serves your source material.
Test a longer brief without relying on vague recall
Use two short versions of a document that you know well. Label each version and include a few explicit differences: an owner, a delivery date and a requirement that was removed. Ask:
Compare Version A and Version B. List the changes to owner, date and required deliverables. Quote a short supporting passage from each version. If a field is absent, say that it is absent.
Start with the current context setting. If the task cannot fit or important supplied material is lost, raise the context by one available step and repeat using the same input. Check the actual passages, not just whether the model produces a longer answer.
A larger context is useful when it gives the model room for evidence the task needs. It is less useful when it carries pages of abandoned conversation that make the current requirement harder to find.
Know when to change the task instead of the setting
If a brief contains unrelated sections, give the model the section that answers the question. If the conversation has accumulated several conflicting plans, provide a checked current-state summary. If the model already has the relevant passage but misreads it, ask a narrower question or compare a more suitable model.
| Problem | First change |
|---|---|
| Necessary input will not fit | Increase supported context if memory permits |
| Old discussion obscures the current plan | Supply a checked brief in a clean conversation |
| Source retrieval missed the passage | Inspect and supply the relevant source |
| Answer is simply too long | Change the requested output and Max output |
This avoids using one setting as a fix for every kind of missed answer. Keep the smallest working context that supports the material you genuinely need for the task.
Keep useful facts available
For a very long project, keep a checked summary of decisions and unresolved questions. Start a new conversation with that summary when old discussion becomes noisy. Raising a setting cannot make an unlimited history available at once.
These controls are present in OGAD 0.0.51. Try OGAD with two notes you know well, then increase context only as far as the task needs.
