LM Studio turned your Mac into an AI workstation. You downloaded models, you chatted with them, you ran a local server. But LM Studio does not have a mobile app. When you walk away from your Mac, you walk away from your AI.
Your Mac is still running. The model is still loaded. You just cannot reach it from your pocket.
Off Grid solves this. It auto-discovers LM Studio servers on your network and gives you a full-featured AI interface on your iPhone - connected to the same models running on your Mac.
Setup in three steps
1. Enable network access in LM Studio
Open LM Studio on your Mac. Click the Developer tab. Load a model (Qwen 3.5 9B is the recommendation if you have 16GB+ RAM). Start the server. Check "Serve on Local Network."
That is one checkbox. No terminal. No environment variables. No firewall configuration.
2. Install Off Grid on your iPhone
Download Off Grid from the App Store (search "Off Grid AI"). Open it. Go to Remote Models. Tap Scan Network.
Off Grid finds your LM Studio server automatically and shows you every model available.

Off Grid scanning the network and discovering LM Studio models - iOS, Android, and servers running side by side.
3. Start chatting
Tap a model. Start typing. Responses stream in real-time over your WiFi. The experience is indistinguishable from chatting in LM Studio's desktop interface - except you are on your couch, in bed, or walking around your house.
Why LM Studio plus Off Grid is a strong combination
LM Studio has the best model browser in the local AI space. Finding, downloading, and managing models is point-and-click. GGUF, MLX, everything organized and searchable. That is LM Studio's job.
Off Grid's job is making those models accessible everywhere else. On your iPhone. On your Android phone. From any room in your house.
LM Studio handles the serving. Off Grid handles the reaching.
And Off Grid does more than relay chat messages. Here is what you get on your iPhone:
Switch models mid-conversation. Start with a fast 4B model for brainstorming. Switch to 9B for the final draft. Same chat, same context, different brain. If LM Studio has multiple models loaded, Off Grid shows all of them.
Projects and knowledge base. Create a project in Off Grid, attach your documents, and any model on your LM Studio server can search through them via built-in RAG. Your research papers, your contracts, your codebase - all indexed locally, all private.
Tool calling. Models that support function calling can use built-in tools automatically. The model chains web search, calculator, and device tools together without you having to do anything.
On-device fallback. Off Grid also runs models directly on your iPhone. Walk out of WiFi range and a smaller on-device model takes over. Come back and your LM Studio models are available again. One app, always working.
Voice input. On-device Whisper speech-to-text. Dictate your prompts, the transcription happens on your iPhone, and the text is sent to your LM Studio server for the response.
The math
ChatGPT Plus: $20/month. Claude Pro: $20/month. That is $240-480/year for AI that sends every word you type to someone else's server.
LM Studio on the Mac you already own: free. Qwen 3.5 9B: free. Off Grid: free and open source.
Qwen 3.5 9B outperforms GPT-OSS-120B on reasoning and language benchmarks. It was released in March 2026. It runs at 30-50 tokens per second on Apple Silicon. For the vast majority of daily AI tasks - writing, summarization, analysis, coding help, brainstorming - there is no practical quality difference between this and a cloud subscription.
The hardware sitting on your desk is already powerful enough. You are just not using it from the device you carry everywhere.
Where this is heading
Off Grid is being built toward a personal AI operating system. Every device you own, every model you have access to, orchestrated into a single private AI system. Network discovery, on-device inference, projects, RAG, tool calling, vision, and voice are all live today. Automatic task routing, seamless device handoff, and shared context across devices are what comes next.
