Hello DEV! 👋 A Marketer’s Journey into Building Web Tools

Hi everyone, I’m Lisa.

I’ve been reading amazing technical articles on DEV for a while now, and I figured it was finally time to step out of the shadows and introduce myself.

To be completely honest, I come from what some developers might jokingly call the "dark side" — Digital Marketing. 😅

For the past 10+ years, my world has been dominated by SEO, user acquisition, content strategy, and analyzing algorithms. But over the last year, my career took a slight pivot that brought me here.

Why I'm Here

In my decade of marketing, I constantly ran into technical bottlenecks. Whether it was handling heavy media files, scraping data, or trying to archive video assets efficiently, I realized that marketers desperately need lightweight, fast web utilities.

Instead of just waiting for someone else to build the perfect tool, I decided to dive into the product side of things. That journey led me to build my own project, SaveFBS (a fast, browser-based media extraction utility).

Building a product from scratch opened my eyes to the incredible complexities of web development—from managing server loads to optimizing the DOM and handling client-side APIs. I realized how much I didn't know about the tech powering the web.

What I Hope to Share & Learn

I joined this community to bridge the gap between Marketing (MarTech) and Web Development.

What I want to learn from you:

  • Best practices for web performance and lightweight UI/UX.
  • How modern browser APIs handle heavy tasks (like streaming and blobs).
  • The architecture behind fast, scalable web apps.

What I’d love to share with you:

  • How to think about SEO before you write your first line of code.
  • Why users actually click on things (and why they abandon great tools).
  • Growth-hacking tips for developers who have built amazing side projects but don't know how to get their first 1,000 users.

I firmly believe that the best products are built when developers and marketers actually understand each other's languages.

I’m thrilled to be part of this community. Are there any other hybrid marketer/builders here? Or any developers who are currently trying to learn how to market their side projects? Let’s connect in the comments!

Cheers,

Lisa Sun
