Data privacy vs. data security

To put it simply:

Data Privacy is an individual or a company’s right to keep their information private. Data privacy focuses on the following:
Managing terms and contracts
Applying proper regulation laws

Data Security deals with the steps we take to ensure that our right to data privacy remains guarded. Data security deals with the more active aspect of keeping our privacy such as:
Ensuring networks are secure
Dealing with breaches
Managing access
Incorporating authentication steps

Businesses need to understand data privacy so they can be aware of their right to privacy. This allows them to set boundaries for clients, sister companies, users, and even their employees when it comes to protecting their data. Equally important, data security is there to ensure that these rights and information are not breached by putting security systems in place.
