I'm done pretending this isn't weird.
There are five companies that are ultimately dictating global functionality now that AI is being integrated into everything.
🚨 How is this not raising 🚩 everywhere in every sector? Mass psychosis.
Let me explain this to you in another way.
AI companies are receiving hundreds of billions of dollars - money that is factually made up.
AI companies are using that money to pay Software Engineers $570,000 per year so they can voluntarily enter into a role that is knowingly not going to be around in a year.
AI companies are using that money to buy ancient and rare books where some of them only 1 copy remains and they are being DESTROYED so Claude can be trained on their contents. Why? Because a judge said so. Seriously? Who was this judge and why hasn't their BAR license been revoked yet? Since when are Judges in favor of book burnings and monopolies? The bad ones.
AI companies are training their models so that their models will be highly opinionated so that you will waste your money arguing with the autocomplete bot trying to get it to comply with your request.
AI is notorious for bad design decisions and horrible choices when it hallucinates.
This small handful of five AI companies are dictating global creativity process of everybody adopting AI.
The job market has been wrecked by AI and the rest of the world is suffering now too because of it. Make it make sense!
Open source models are great and all, but lets be completely frank - they still suck. I'll give you an example.
Asking a local Minimax 2.7 (128GB RAM model) to build a contact us form in Go results in a pattern being selected that is incompatible with Go and the bot just hallucinates thinking that package scopes can be swapped around because the type Thing interface{} exists in packageA and packageB that means that when a function is asking for a packageB.Thing, the local AI will pass in a packageA.Thing and then not understand what it did wrong and why.
So, even to this day, the open source AI and the LLMs are radically behind the 5 companies closed sourced models can accomplish. They were trained on working data, not just reddit posts.
But ultimately what we have are five AI companies that are dictating global policy. The open source models are training themselves off from these closed source models. It's a circular feedback loop onto itself that bypasses solving the attribution and consent problem.
Since you're part of the dev.to community here, you know already that The Library was acquired by (my opinion that it was acquired in bad faith) these 5 AI companies that are being given global control permission that ultimately invalidates the sovereign claim that any Government can make against AI dictating what life will be like. It truly feels like you will own nothing and be happy about it.
Tell me, are you okay with working for the rest of your life for money that is printed out of thin air that is typed into a computer so that you can own nothing? The and be happy about it is where I am lost in the argument of owning nothing.
All I can say at the end of this piece is that AI has true FOMO around it and it has consistently underdelivered for me in every evaluation that I have put it to the test in.
Not only was Codebeg's decision correct but I also believe that other organizations need to make public declarations against these closed source AI companies. I am in favor of opposing closed source AI under all circumstances and conditions. In fact, I want the source code to be public domain.
Because of this problem, billionaires are now trillionaires and the poor are getting poorer. The median income in the US is $83K per year for a family of four. In order to live comfortably it costs no less than $193K per year in the US. That means that by design, the mass majority of citizens are in poverty. The solution isn't UBI. The solution is less multi-national corporations actually.
Trillionaires will disagree with me. Let them.
