Building Team_Zenix: A Collaborative Multi-Agent AI Software Development Team

Building Team_Zenix: A Collaborative Multi-Agent AI Software Development Team

๐Ÿš€ Introduction

What if AI agents could work together like a real software development team?

Software development is not just about writing code. It involves identifying bugs, understanding their root causes, implementing solutions, testing different scenarios, and reviewing code quality.

Managing all these activities individually can be time-consuming.

To explore a better approach, we developed Team_Zenix, a multi-agent AI software development project built using Switch and Discord.

Our goal is to demonstrate how multiple specialized AI agents can collaborate to solve software development problems while keeping humans in control of important decisions.

๐Ÿ’ก What is Team_Zenix?

Team_Zenix is a collaborative AI-powered development system in which different AI agents perform different software engineering responsibilities.

Instead of asking one AI assistant to handle everything, we divide the development process into specialized roles.

Our system consists of three AI agents and one human supervisor.

๐Ÿค– Meet Our AI Agents

1. Developer Agent

The Developer Agent is responsible for investigating software bugs and identifying their root causes.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing problematic code.
  • Identifying logical errors.
  • Proposing corrected implementations.
  • Explaining the changes made.

2. Tester Agent

The Tester Agent ensures that proposed solutions behave as expected.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Creating test cases.
  • Testing normal inputs.
  • Checking edge cases.
  • Identifying unexpected behavior.

3. Reviewer Agent

The Reviewer Agent evaluates the proposed code changes before they are accepted.

Its responsibilities include:

  • Reviewing code quality.
  • Identifying potential issues.
  • Checking whether the solution addresses the original problem.
  • Providing improvement suggestions.

4. Human Supervisor

AI-generated solutions should not automatically become final decisions.

The Human Supervisor:

  • Reviews proposed changes.
  • Evaluates agent recommendations.
  • Approves or rejects modifications.
  • Maintains control over the final merge.

โš™๏ธ Technology Stack

We use the following technologies to build Team_Zenix:

  • Switch: Coordinates specialized AI agents and their collaborative workflow.
  • Discord: Provides a shared communication environment for agent interaction.
  • GitHub: Supports version control, code collaboration, and pull request reviews.
  • JavaScript: Used for our sample debugging demonstration.

๐Ÿ”„ How Does Team_Zenix Work?

Our proposed workflow follows these steps:

  1. Bug Identification: A software issue is provided to the AI development team.
  2. Investigation: The Developer Agent analyzes the code and identifies the root cause.
  3. Code Fix: The Developer Agent proposes a corrected implementation.
  4. Testing: The Tester Agent validates the solution using normal and edge-case inputs.
  5. Code Review: The Reviewer Agent evaluates the proposed changes and identifies possible problems.
  6. Human Approval: The Human Supervisor reviews the final recommendations and decides whether to approve the changes.

This workflow encourages collaboration between specialized agents instead of relying on a single AI response.

๐Ÿงช Our Practical Demonstration

To demonstrate our concept, we selected a JavaScript function that calculates the average of an array of numbers.

The original implementation contains an off-by-one error in its loop condition.

Buggy implementation:

function calculateAverage(numbers) {
    let sum = 0;

    for (let i = 0; i <= numbers.length; i++) {
        sum += numbers[i];
    }

    return sum / numbers.length;
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The problem is the loop condition:

i <= numbers.length
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Array indexing starts at zero, so the final valid index is numbers.length - 1.

Corrected implementation:

function calculateAverage(numbers) {
    if (numbers.length === 0) {
        throw new Error("Array cannot be empty");
    }

    let sum = 0;

    for (let i = 0; i < numbers.length; i++) {
        sum += numbers[i];
    }

    return sum / numbers.length;
}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The corrected version:

  • Uses the proper loop condition.
  • Prevents accessing an invalid array index.
  • Handles empty arrays explicitly.

Our three AI agents can collaborate to investigate, test, and review this correction before human approval.

๐ŸŒŸ Why Is This Project Important?

Team_Zenix explores how multi-agent AI collaboration can support software engineering.

Some of its potential benefits include:

  • Task Specialization: Each agent focuses on a specific responsibility.
  • Collaborative Problem Solving: Multiple agents contribute different perspectives.
  • Improved Testing: Dedicated testing helps identify edge cases.
  • Code Quality: Independent review provides another layer of evaluation.
  • Human Control: Important development decisions remain with the human supervisor.

๐Ÿ”ฎ Future Scope

We aim to expand Team_Zenix with additional capabilities, including:

  • Automated GitHub pull request analysis.
  • More advanced debugging capabilities.
  • Support for multiple programming languages.
  • Automated test generation and execution.
  • Improved communication and coordination between agents.
  • Integration with larger software development workflows.

๐ŸŽฏ Conclusion

Team_Zenix is our exploration of a collaborative approach to AI-assisted software development.

By dividing responsibilities among Developer, Tester, and Reviewer agents, we aim to demonstrate how AI systems can work together to support the software development lifecycle.

Our vision is simple:

Multiple Agents. One Development Team. Human-Controlled Decisions.

We believe the future of software development will not simply be about AI writing code, but also about intelligent systems collaborating to build, test, and improve software responsibly.
