How to check if an Android app is safe to install

Before you install a new Android app, it is worth taking a few minutes to check it. A quick look at the publisher, reviews, permissions, and update history can help you avoid apps that are low quality, misleading, or risky.

Check the publisher or developer

Start with the name of the publisher or developer listed on the app's store page. A well-known developer will usually have a consistent name, a working website or contact page, and several other apps. Be cautious if the name is spelled oddly, copies a famous brand with a small change, or has no other information available. If you cannot tell who made the app, that is a reason to pause and look for more information before installing it.

Read reviews and ratings carefully

Ratings alone do not tell the whole story. Look at the overall rating, the number of ratings, and the most recent reviews, not just the most positive ones. Reviews that describe real experiences, specific problems, or unexpected behavior are more useful than short, generic praise. Watch for many similar reviews posted in a short time, complaints about crashes or misleading features, and comments from users who say the app did not do what it promised. If recent reviews raise the same concern repeatedly, take that seriously.

Review permissions before you install

Permissions show what an app can access on your phone, such as your contacts, location, camera, microphone, or files. Compare the permissions with what the app actually needs to do. A simple note-taking app, for example, does not normally need access to your contacts or precise location. On Android, you can also review and change permissions after installation in your phone's settings. If a permission seems unnecessary, you can deny it, limit it, or choose not to install the app.

Check the update history

Look at when the app was last updated and how often it has been updated. Regular updates often mean the developer is fixing bugs and keeping the app working with newer versions of Android. An app that has not been updated for a very long time may have unpatched problems or may not work well on a current phone. A sudden change in the developer name, app description, or behavior after an update is also worth checking.

What to do if something looks wrong

If anything looks wrong, the safest step is simply not to install the app. Look for a well-reviewed alternative from a known developer instead. If you have already installed an app and later notice unexpected ads, battery drain, strange permission requests, or behavior you did not agree to, uninstall it and check your phone's settings for permissions you may want to remove. You can also report the app through the store if you believe it is misleading or harmful. Taking a few minutes to check first is much easier than cleaning up a problem later.
