Demystifying DNS Resolution Delays on Consumer ISP Routers

DNS resolution latency is constantly misdiagnosed as slow internet.

Browsers must resolve domains to IP addresses. If your ISP DNS servers are overloaded, this adds 100ms to every single web request.

It feels sluggish.

The Diagnostic

Bypass the domain layer.

Navigate directly to an IP address like https://1.1.1.1. If it loads instantly but https://google.com hangs on "Resolving host", your DNS forwarder is broken.

Bypassing ISP DNS

Consumer routers intercept port 53. They force your devices to use their sluggish resolvers.

I rip this out during infrastructure upgrades for local businesses in Sunningdale. I force the primary DHCP scope to hand out high-performance public resolvers:

  1. Cloudflare: 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 (See Cloudflare DNS Docs)
  2. Quad9: 9.9.9.9

Validating the Path

Run nslookup immediately.

nslookup google.com
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

If the server response is your local gateway (192.168.1.1), the router is proxying requests. Fix the DHCP configuration so upstream DNS addresses go directly to client devices.
