Say the Hard Thing Kindly

There's a false choice
people get stuck in.

Be honest and harsh,
or be kind and vague.

You don't have to pick.

The best communicators
say the hard thing
and stay kind while they do it.

Kindness isn't softening the truth
until it disappears.
It's caring enough
to deliver it clearly,
in a way the person can actually hear.

Vague-and-nice feels kind
but it isn't.
You walk away comfortable
and they walk away
with no idea what you meant.

Harsh-and-honest feels brave
but it isn't.
You get the truth off your chest
and they spend all their energy
defending themselves
instead of listening.

Aim for the third thing.

Clear about the message.
Warm about the person.

Say the hard thing.
Just say it like you're on their side —
because if you're doing it right,
you are.
