Your Only Rival Is Yesterday's You

There is a specific kind of tired that comes from comparing yourself to everyone else.

You open a feed and see someone younger shipping something brilliant.
You watch a peer get the role you wanted.
You read a thread full of people who seem to know things you do not.

And quietly, the wind goes out of you.

Let me offer you a way out of that.

You are measuring yourself against the wrong person.

When you compare yourself to others, you are comparing your full inside to their edited outside.

You know your doubts, your slow days, your unfinished drafts.
You see only their finished, polished, posted best.

That is not a fair fight, and you rigged it to lose.

So change who you are racing.

The only rival worth having is who you were yesterday.

Are you a little sharper than last month?
Do you understand something now that confused you before?
Did you handle a hard moment better than the old you would have?

That is the scoreboard that actually means something.

Because you and the person you envy did not start at the same place, with the same time, the same luck, the same road.

Comparing your chapter three to their chapter twenty tells you nothing except how to feel bad.

But comparing your chapter three to your chapter two?

That tells you the truth.
That tells you whether you are moving.

And moving is the only thing you actually control.

The other people will always be there, some ahead, some behind, on paths you cannot see the whole of.

Let them run their race.

You run yours.

Wake up and try to be a slightly better version of the person you were.

Do that enough days in a row, and one day you look back and cannot believe how far the quiet, steady, un-compared progress carried you.

Beat yesterday's you.

That is the only competition you can win.
