The Laws of the Fair: Marketing That's Worked for 10,000 Years
Before websites, before print ads, before writing itself — there were fairs. Mobile markets traveling from village to village. The same rules that made cave people stop at a trader's stall still work today.
I call them the Laws of the Fair.
Law #1: You Have the Right to Demand Attention
In a fair with 50 traders, if you don't grab attention, you don't exist. Same online. Microsoft's 2024 study: average attention span is 8.25 seconds. Less than a goldfish.
The hierarchy:
- Beginners ask for 5 seconds
- Competent marketers earn 1 minute
- Masters hold attention for hours
Your job: use every psychological mechanism available. Specific numbers, emotional triggers, pattern breaks.
Example:
- Bad: "New contact finder tool" → 12% open rate
- Good: "I found 847 valid emails in 3 minutes" → 34% open rate
You're not being pushy. You're being professional.
Law #2: Take the First Step
Every transaction starts with action. Not planning. Doing.
- Planning: "I'll write a blog post"
- Action: Published at 9:47 AM Tuesday
Harvard Business Review 2023: founders who acted within 48 hours were 3.2x more likely to succeed than planners.
Planning feels good but doesn't work. Your brain gets dopamine without risk.
The 48-hour rule: When you spot an opportunity, act within 48 hours. Not perfect action. Any action.
Law #3: Be Visible
If people can't see you, they can't buy from you.
Visibility hierarchy:
- Movement (evolutionary survival)
- Brightness/color
- Size
- Sound
Video gets 1200% more shares than text. Orange buttons convert 32% better than blue. Large CTAs get 47% more clicks.
You can't fight biology. Use it.
The 10,000-Year Hack
Your first customer must be you. Use your product daily. Find bugs. Fix them. Then find customer #2.
Journal of Marketing 2024: founders who used their product daily were 4.7x more likely to achieve product-market fit.
When You're Stuck
Ask yourself:
- Am I demanding attention?
- Am I taking action?
- Am I visible?
- Am I my own customer?
If "no" to any — that's your problem. Not your product. Your execution.
These laws worked for 10,000 years. They'll work for the next 10,000.
