Hiding YouTube Shorts on iPhone when they keep showing up in search and Subscriptions (2026)

minulo hides YouTube Shorts on iPhone and keeps normal videos: it removes the Shorts shelf and the Shorts tab and opens Shorts links in the normal player, so a Short you tap in Subscriptions or search doesn't pull you into the swipe feed. Hiding is free. YouTube's own Shorts feed limit doesn't do this, because it only covers the Shorts feed, so Shorts still show up in search results and Subscriptions after you set it to zero. (I'm the developer of minulo.)

The YouTube details below come from YouTube Help, checked on October 27, 2026. YouTube changes its app often, so menu names may differ.

What YouTube's settings do, and where they stop

Where YouTube says Shorts appear

In its help for creators, YouTube explains how viewers find Shorts. Besides the Shorts button at the bottom of the app, it lists search results across YouTube (including most smart TVs, game consoles and streaming devices), the homepage, the creator's channel homepage, Subscriptions and notifications.

So hiding the Shorts shelf on Home or limiting the Shorts feed covers only part of that list. Here is how each place looks from YouTube's side:

  • Shorts tab and feed: the feed limit shows a reminder you can dismiss. Nothing else built in.
  • Home: the X on the Shorts shelf and Show fewer Shorts. YouTube's help doesn't say whether the feed limit affects Home.
  • Search results: a Type filter, applied per search.
  • Subscriptions and channel pages: I couldn't find a setting in YouTube's help.
  • Notifications: you can change notifications for each channel.

The Shorts feed limit

  1. In the YouTube app, tap the You tab, then Settings.
  2. Tap Time management, then Shorts feed limit.
  3. Pick a limit. YouTube says the list includes zero.

YouTube's help says that when the limit is reached in the Shorts feed, a message reminds you, with an option to dismiss or ignore it. It doesn't say the limit removes Shorts from search, Subscriptions or channel pages, and it doesn't say what happens to Shorts you open from search.

The Type filter in search

  1. Open the YouTube app and tap Search.
  2. Enter a search term.
  3. When the results show, tap Filter.
  4. Choose a Type, then tap Back.

YouTube's help names Type as a filter but doesn't list its choices, so check whether your app offers a Videos option. The help describes the filter for each search, and I couldn't confirm that it stays on for the next one.

Subscriptions and channel pages

YouTube's help describes the Subscriptions feed as the newest content from channels you subscribe to, and lists it among the places viewers find Shorts. I couldn't find a setting that hides Shorts there or on channel pages. If Shorts reach you through alerts, changing notifications per channel helps with that part only.

How I hide Shorts with minulo

A note before the steps: I'm Ayumu Kitabayashi, the developer of minulo, so this section describes my own app. minulo is an iPhone app that opens YouTube's official website inside it.

  1. Install minulo, tap Add a service on the home screen and choose YouTube.
  2. Tap the gear next to YouTube and turn on Hide the Shorts shelf, Hide the Shorts tab and Send Shorts links to the normal player. This is free.
  3. Subscriptions, Watch later and search open straight from the minulo home screen.
  4. Optional: in the Block tab, lock the official YouTube app with Screen Time. Its block screen has an Open in minulo button that takes you to YouTube without Shorts.

To be clear about what this does: the Shorts shelf and Shorts tab are hidden, and Shorts links open in the normal player. I don't promise to remove every single Short from Subscriptions or search results. When you tap one there, it plays like a normal video instead of starting the swipe feed. Hiding is a setting, so it stays until you change it, and there is no reminder to dismiss.

The Shorts feed limit and the search filter belong to the YouTube app. minulo's settings work only when you open YouTube inside minulo.

Five limits of minulo

  • The official app doesn't change. Shorts are hidden only inside minulo.
  • Free locks last up to 2 hours. Locking the official YouTube app with Screen Time is free for up to 2 hours per block.
  • Nightly schedules are Pro. Schedules by day and time, longer blocks, Hard Mode and multiple block lists are part of minulo Pro, which is optional.
  • No notifications while an app is locked. While minulo blocks an official app, that app's notifications don't arrive, and minulo sends none of its own.
  • It's an iPhone app, with a Mac version too. The Mac version works in Safari and Chrome. There is no Android version yet.

minulo is new, with few ratings so far.
