Building a Southeast Asia App Market Watch with the FoxData API

Data: FoxData API snapshot, 2026-08-20. All numbers below are real API responses.

Southeast Asia is one of the fastest-growing mobile app regions in 2026: download volumes across e-commerce and gaming keep climbing in Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia. But for growth teams, cross-country, cross-store ranking and keyword data lives everywhere — collecting it by hand eats half a day every week.

This post shows a real case: how to build a Southeast Asia market watch in 30 minutes with 5 FoxData API endpoints.

Step 1 — Download Estimates

Thailand App Store download ranking (2026-08-20, via the FoxData App Data API):

Rank App Weekly downloads Note
1 X 21,175 Steady #1
2 Earthquake alerts 3,078 Disaster-prep demand
3 TradingView 2,750 Flat at ~458/day

The interesting bit: TradingView's daily downloads barely move (~458/day) — a stable-demand app. Meanwhile lottery app ตรวจหวย QRCode jumped from 9 to 138 downloads/day — event-driven demand. Two completely different growth logics, and your UA strategy should treat them differently.

Step 2 — Keyword Coverage

Thailand shopping category (App Store free chart, top 4):

App Rank Keywords covered
Shopee 1 7,403
SHEIN 2 11,976
Temu 3 16,843
Lazada 4 3,860

Counter-intuitive: #1 Shopee covers only 44% of Temu's keywords. Temu is flooding search entry points with keyword volume — a clear ASO threat signal for Shopee, and a leading indicator for which app takes the top spot next quarter.

Step 3 — Search Index

Cross-country search demand is the key input for "which market first":

Keyword Vietnam Thailand Gap
game 76 70 VN stronger
video 51 48 VN stronger
shopping 46 45 even

Vietnam out-searches Thailand on every major term — budget reallocation decisions can be made directly from this data.

Step 4 — Competitor Lists

The competitor endpoint returns an app's competitor set. Shopee Thailand's list is revealing: rivals are not only SHEIN/Temu/Lazada, but also Lotus's, Big C, Makro, Central App — local retail giants. E-commerce has become omni-channel retail warfare; watching only the shopping chart hides your real opponents.

Putting It Together — a 30-minute monitoring loop

daily 09:00 (cron)
  ├─ GET download ranking (TH / VN / ID)
  ├─ GET keyword coverage (top-5 competitors)
  ├─ GET search index (core keywords × 3 countries)
  └─ write results to Google Sheets / JSON → weekly report
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Every endpoint is one GET, JSON out, App Store + Google Play covered — no scrapers, nothing to maintain:

import requests

API = "https://api.foxdata.com/apiv1/open-api"
headers = {"x-openapi-key": "<YOUR_LICENSE>"}

# daily market watch
r = requests.post(f"{API}/app/download-ranking",
                  json={"region": "TH", "category": "-1", "date": "2026-08-20"},
                  headers=headers)
print(r.json()["data"]["result"][:5])
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Takeaways

  • Rankings show what happened; keyword coverage shows what's being prepared; search index shows demand; competitor lists show the full battlefield.
  • Combined, the four dimensions are a low-cost market radar.
  • The value of a data API isn't just saved time — it turns decisions from "I think" into "the data shows".
