I put a walking pad under my desk to move more.
The biggest surprise wasn’t my step count.
For years, I had headaches roughly once a week and a familiar afternoon slump. A 40-hour working week, children, dogs and on-call duty leave little room for another commitment.
I already had a height-adjustable desk. So I added a walking pad underneath it.
First, just during meetings.
Then while presenting.
Eventually, while programming too.
Instead of finding extra time for movement, I made movement part of the time I was already spending at my desk.
Today, I can spend around six hours walking during a working day, with my daily step count reaching about 35,000.
But the change I value most? My recurring headaches have disappeared, and I feel awake in the afternoon.
That’s my personal experience, not proof of a treatment. And those numbers are where my routine has gradually taken me—not a target for someone starting out.
After 50, I appreciate a habit that fits into my life rather than adding another item to the calendar.
I’ve written the full story, including a link to my Apple Health step history in Kraftwerk:
