Disclosure: I'm the developer of Boss Lab, so take my take with a grain of salt. I'll try to be fair to CATS, which is a well-made game.
Crash Arena Turbo Stars (CATS) and Boss Lab look similar at first glance: both are Android games where you build a robot, then watch it fight automatically in a side-view arena. The difference is in what you spend your time on.
What they share
- Build-then-auto-fight: you design, the battle plays out on its own.
- Side-view 2D arenas with physics-driven combat.
- Lots of parts to mix, match and upgrade.
CATS: vehicles, parts and PvP chaos
CATS leans into wacky vehicles built from many parts. The fun is in the chaos, collecting and upgrading parts, and climbing the PvP ladder against other players' contraptions.
Boss Lab: boss campaign, AI brains, async Arena
- Boss campaign: a progression of boss fights that you beat by tuning your build.
- AI brains: you program how your robot behaves, not only what it is made of.
- Async Arena PvP: fight other players' robots without both being online.
- 60+ parts to build with.
Which fits you?
- Pick CATS if you want vehicle-style chaos and a large PvP-focused community.
- Pick Boss Lab if you want a single-player boss campaign, to tinker with robot behaviour, and low-pressure async PvP.
Both are free on Android, so trying both costs you nothing.
