Why Playwright's connect_over_cdp() hangs on your real Chrome — and a 90-line fix

If you've ever tried to drive your real Chrome — the one with your logins and 20 tabs —
over CDP instead of a throwaway headless instance, you've probably watched this freeze:

browser = p.chromium.connect_over_cdp("http://localhost:9222")  # ...hangs for 180s
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

It works in a demo (fresh browser, one tab). Then you point it at a browser that's been
open a while, and it times out. You bump the timeout. It still hangs. Here's why — and a
tiny fix.

Why it hangs

connect_over_cdp() doesn't just attach to a tab. It negotiates at the browser level:
it runs Target.setAutoAttach and tries to enumerate every target — every tab, every
service worker, extension page, and omnibox popup. On a fresh browser that's instant. On a
real, busy browser it stalls, and you get a timeout instead of a session.

It gets worse across Chrome versions: newer Chrome (M144+) changed CDP behavior enough that
Playwright can open the websocket but then sits waiting for protocol messages that never
come the way it expects. Bumping the timeout doesn't help because the problem isn't speed —
it's the browser-level handshake.

The fix: talk to ONE page target, skip the browser-level dance

You rarely need the whole browser graph. You need a page: navigate it, eval some JS, grab
text, screenshot. For that you can attach straight to a single page target's websocket
and skip Target.setAutoAttach entirely. No enumeration, no stall.

import json, time, urllib.request, websocket # pip install websocket-client

def new_page(url="about:blank", port=9222):
    req = urllib.request.Request(f"http://127.0.0.1:{port}/json/new?{url}", method="PUT")
    return json.loads(urllib.request.urlopen(req).read())["webSocketDebuggerUrl"]

ws = websocket.create_connection(new_page("https://example.com"), suppress_origin=True)
# send Page.enable / Runtime.enable, then Runtime.evaluate { expression: "document.title" }
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

That connects instantly against a browser with 20 tabs open, because it never asks Chrome
to enumerate anything.

Packaged it

I wrapped this into a one-file driver with goto / eval / text() / screenshot() /
page_ws(match=...)
so you don't have to hand-roll the JSON-RPC. It's cdpkit — $5, one
dependency: https://bottiezim.gumroad.com/l/fmgjcj

And if you just want the "launch Chrome with the right flags on any OS" part solved (the
other thing everyone googles), that's a separate free tool:

Prefer GitHub? The free launcher is open source: https://github.com/bottiezimmie-cloud/start-chrome-debug

public. These are the ones I actually use. Fix above works whether or not you buy anything.
