Every app on your phone is competing for the same scarce resource: your attention. Not your time — your time is renewable, you get more of it tomorrow. Attention is different. Once it's spent on a notification, a red badge, a "just checking in" ping, it's gone. You don't get that fragment of focus back by sleeping.

The attention economy runs on this asymmetry. It's not an accident that apps feel compulsive — it's the product.

The mechanism isn't new

Notification design borrows directly from operant conditioning — the same variable-ratio reward schedule B.F. Skinner documented in the 1950s, the one that makes slot machines the most addictive devices ever built. Unpredictable rewards on an unpredictable schedule produce more checking behavior than predictable ones. A notification that might be interesting pulls harder than one that's guaranteed boring or guaranteed exciting.

Your phone doesn't need to be interesting every time. It just needs to be interesting sometimes, at random. That's enough to keep you checking.
