OpenAI begins testing Sponsored Agents in ChatGPT ads

OpenAI is testing Sponsored Agents, a clearly labeled ChatGPT advertising format that lets a user choose to start a conversation with an AI representative of a business. The immediate significance is a new trust boundary inside ChatGPT: a sponsored conversation can answer product questions and send a user to a website, but OpenAI has not publicly established that it can complete purchases, bookings or lead capture in the chat itself.

Key facts

  • Sponsored Agents are in a limited alpha with selected U.S. advertisers.
  • Users can ask a business representative follow-up questions and follow a link to the advertiser's site.
  • Advertisers receive aggregated performance information and direct-interaction messages, not ordinary chat history.
  • The primary source is OpenAI's advertising announcement.

OpenAI describes a sequence in which a person sees an ad, elects to start a sponsored conversation, asks about products or services, then follows a website link. The example is furniture: fit, seats and finish care. The company says the sponsored conversation is distinct from ChatGPT's independent answer and from the original user conversation. That separation is important because the interface will contain both advice a user expects from an assistant and a representation paid for by a business.

OpenAI's ads FAQ says ad selection may use current-conversation context and intent, landing-page and ad-copy information, advertiser-provided targeting and, when personalization is enabled, selected signals from the broader ChatGPT experience such as memory and recent chats. OpenAI says those signals are not shared with advertisers. When a user chooses a sponsored interaction, the advertiser sees only messages sent directly there. This is a useful boundary, but it is not a complete published data schema for every future agent action.

The advertiser side is also agent-assisted. OpenAI says businesses can use natural-language prompts in ChatGPT Work with an Ads Manager plugin to create, update and analyze campaigns, turn a website or brief into creative and review generated copy or images. HubSpot is the first CRM partner; Shopify is the first ecommerce partner for catalog syncing, campaign management and conversion measurement. Those integrations make campaign operations easier, but they do not prove that a Sponsored Agent itself can invoke a checkout or collect a form.

OpenAI calls the format “clearly labeled.” The phrase is the right standard, not a complete answer to the risk. OpenAI's ad policies bar ads beside sensitive or vulnerable conversations and prohibit misleading ads, interface imitation and unsupported claims. Its Ad Tools Terms make advertisers responsible for a Sponsored Agent's content, configurations, actions and output. The current public policy does not yet spell out a distinct agent-specific safety, escalation or retention regime.

The strongest criticism is that a conversational ad can feel more like advice than a banner, particularly when targeting uses current intent. The strongest defense is that voluntary entry, prominent labeling, separated history and site handoff may be more intelligible than hidden product placement in a general answer. The decisive implementation question will be whether the sponsored surface stays visibly separate as it becomes more capable.

For marketers this is a real new channel; for users it is a test of interface trust. Treat the alpha as a product-representative conversation, not a personal shopper with authority to transact. The next disclosures worth watching are actions, checkout, lead handling, advertiser retention and the audit trail that explains why an ad was shown.
