Why Naive Multi-ESP Email Failover Gets Your Backup AWS SES & Postmark Accounts Suspended (Plus the 550 5.1.1 Cross-ESP Suppression Architecture)

When a transactional email provider hits a regional outage or shared IP block, the most common developer reflex is to wrap resend.send() in a try/catch block that automatically retries the failed payload through AWS SES or Postmark.

In production, that naive try/catch pattern is a ticking time bomb that routinely gets backup AWS SES accounts placed under probation or suspended (>5% bounce cliff) within hours.

1. The Fatal Mistake: Failing Over 550 5.1.1 Hard Bounces

If an attacker or bot submits 500 invalid emails to your signup or password-reset endpoint, your primary ESP rejects or bounces them with 550 5.1.1 (User Unknown) or 550 5.1.10 (NullMX). If your failover wrapper catches that exception and immediately fires the exact same non-existent address through your standby AWS SES account, you instantly poison your standby IP reputation.

Sample of Our 20-Row 2026 SMTP Enhanced Status Failover Matrix (4 of 20 Codes Shown)

SMTP Code Enhanced Status Meaning Failover Decision Required Engineering Action
550 5.1.1 / 5.1.10 User Unknown / NullMX NEVER FAILOVER Write to global cross-ESP suppression table immediately
550 5.7.606 Microsoft SNDS Shared IP Block FAILOVER IMMEDIATELY Route @outlook.com/@hotmail.com to Postmark or dedicated SES IP
550 5.7.26 Missing DMARC/DKIM/SPF Alignment DO NOT FAILOVER Failing over with the same unaligned From: domain fails on all ESPs
421 4.7.0 Receiving MTA Greylisting / Throttle FAILOVER FOR OTP ONLY Fail over auth OTPs/magic links; defer lifecycle emails +15m

2. Cross-ESP Suppression & SNDS Domain Router (10-Line Architecture Excerpt)

// Teaser Excerpt: Cross-ESP Hard-Bounce Shield & SNDS Router
const suppressed = await this.store.get(`email:suppressed:${normalizedEmail}`);
if (suppressed) return { sent: false, suppressed: true, reason: suppressed };

if (/^(5\.1\.1|5\.1\.10|5\.1\.2|5\.4\.1)$/.test(err.smtpEnhancedCode)) {
  await this.store.set(`email:suppressed:${normalizedEmail}`, `HARD_BOUNCE_${err.smtpEnhancedCode}`, 31536000);
  return { sent: false, suppressed: true }; // Never leak hard bounces to backup SES/Postmark!
}
