Authier is a smaller, experimental project for people who value its browser-first workflow, want to examine the entire stack, or want to help shape a device-aware password manager.

What both projects have in common
Authier and Bitwarden are both open-source password managers that encrypt vault data on the client before synchronizing it. Both offer browser-based workflows, credential storage, TOTP support, and ways to review devices or login requests.
That overlap matters. “Open source” or “device approval” is not, by itself, a reason to choose Authier over Bitwarden. The useful comparison is about maturity, implementation choices, product scope, and the experience you want.
How the interfaces look

Where Bitwarden is clearly ahead
Security maturity and independent audits
Bitwarden publishes recurring third-party security assessments, including source-code reviews, penetration tests, and a 2025 cryptography report. It also has a public security whitepaper and a much larger population of users exercising its clients and infrastructure.
Authier has not published an independent third-party audit. Public source code makes review possible, but it does not create the same evidence as a professional audit program or years of operational exposure.
Platform breadth and ecosystem
Bitwarden offers mature desktop, mobile, browser, command-line, organization, sharing, passkey, and enterprise capabilities. Authier is currently centered on its browser extension and web vault, with a smaller mobile footprint and a narrower feature set.
Key-derivation options
Bitwarden supports both PBKDF2 and Argon2id with configurable parameters. Authier currently derives its client encryption key with PBKDF2 using SHA-512 and 600,000 iterations. Argon2id is not currently offered as an Authier setting.
What Authier is exploring
A device-first enrollment model
Authier treats approved devices as a central part of account enrollment. A new browser begins with a pending challenge, and an already-approved device reviews the request before the browser completes enrollment and synchronizes the encrypted vault.
Bitwarden also supports login approval from another device and new-device verification. The distinction is not that Bitwarden lacks device controls; it is that Authier's smaller product is organized around that trusted-device concept from the outset.
A compact browser workflow
Authier focuses on keeping credentials and TOTP codes close to the browser login flow, including pages that ask for a username and password in separate steps. If you mostly live in Firefox or Chromium and prefer a smaller, focused interface, that constraint may feel appealing. If you need native clients and a broad ecosystem, it will feel limiting.
A single public monorepo
Authier's extension, web vault, mobile application, shared cryptography, and backend live in one AGPL-licensed repository. That makes it relatively easy to trace a product behavior across the stack or start contributing without first mapping several projects.
Which password manager should you choose?
Choose Bitwarden if you want the more established option, need broad platform support, depend on enterprise features, or consider published independent audits a requirement. That describes most people looking for a primary password manager.
That recommendation is especially important for banking, cryptocurrency custody, administrative access, and other accounts where one compromise would have an unusually high impact. Until Authier publishes a thorough independent audit, Bitwarden or 1Password is the more conservative home for those secrets.
Consider Authier if you specifically want to explore its trusted-device workflow, prefer a browser-first product, want to inspect a compact full stack, or are interested in contributing to a young open-source project.
For high-impact secrets, evaluate product maturity, recovery design, device security, audit history, and your own threat model—not just a feature table.
Try both with low-risk data
Password managers are unusually sensitive software. If you are curious about Authier, start with low-impact accounts, keep independent recovery options, export backups where appropriate, and read the security architecture and limitations before moving anything important.
